But time waits for no man, let alone smartphone manufacturers. What’s Samsung got up its sleeve for the replacement? Here’s our roundup of all the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 rumours.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 launch date
With no firm news yet, it’s hard to predict the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 release date. Despite the name, it’ll be the third phone in the Flip series. And while the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G launched in August 2021, the original Galaxy Z Flip made its debut in February 2020.
What’s likely is that the Galaxy Z Flip4 will launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold4. So far, all three generations of the Galaxy Z Fold have launched in late summer, so it’s likely we’ll see both these phones by early September 2022.
As with the Galaxy Z Flip4, it’s possible that the Galaxy Z Fold4 may be renamed by the time it launches out of sensitivity to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, for which ‘Z’ has become a symbol.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 design
Samsung can be remarkably conservative, and there’s no great reason to make major changes to the excellent Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. As such, we’d expect the Galaxy Z Flip4 design to be highly similar, perhaps with detail improvements to the hinge, and ideally a slight reduction in size or weight. As yet, there are no serious rumours to suggest otherwise.

It’s rumoured that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 inner display will stick at the current phone’s 6.7”. Some sources suggest that the small outer screen will grow slightly, possibly up to 2”.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 will support 5G, and offer waterproofing. It’s possible that Samsung may also come up with a way to dustproof the phone, which would be an improvement over the Z Flip3 5G.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 performance
Rumours suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip4 will use Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ processor. That’s brilliant news, given that the eight-core, 4nm chip ought to pack a considerable punch. Even if the phone uses the regular 8 Gen 1 chip, that still suggests it’ll have plenty of power.

Sources have it that Samsung might upgrade the Galaxy Z Flip4 camera to a triple-lens setup. It’s also thought to be evaluating an under-screen selfie camera, although a more conventional hole-punch design is being looked at, too. It’s too early for especially reliable information here.

If there’s one area of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G that Samsung really needs to address, it’s the phone’s poor battery life. One source claims that the Galaxy Z Flip4 will get a 10-20% capacity increase here, although it’s hard to see how Samsung would achieve that without making it noticeably larger. If the battery remains the same, we’d have to hope that the cutting-edge processor would help deliver greater efficiency and longer between charges.

Samsung managed to make the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G significantly cheaper than the original Galaxy Z Flip, and potential buyers of the Galaxy Z Flip4 will be hoping for a further price reduction. It’s widely thought that Samsung is aiming to ramp up sales of its folding phones, and lowering the price would be an important step in achieving this. The Galaxy Z Flip3 5G starts at £949 from Samsung. Expect the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 UK price to be at least a little lower.
