Best budget phones 31/01/22

Not everyone can afford the latest flagship iPhone. And even if you can, you might not want to blow a grand or more on something that can get smashed, stolen – or dropped in the toilet on a night out. So when you’re not looking to spend top dollar, where do you go for the best value? In this guide we’ll look at the best budget phones.

Of course, when the best new phones cost up to £1,500, everyone has their own idea of how much a budget phone should cost. We’re going to focus on what your money buys at two price points: less than £500, and less than £250. We’ll help you find the best new phones, and the refurbished phone deals that could save you a packet.

Bargain phone tips

First up, it pays to consider whether you’re set on a new phone, or whether you’re happy to save money on a reconditioned mobile phone. Buy a new phone and you get the satisfaction that nobody’s ever touched your pride and joy – but it comes at a price.

While Mozillion can help you get a great deal on brand new, SIM-free mobile phones, you’ll always pay less for something that’s been previously owned. This can really help if you’re set on getting the most phone for your money. Buy a nearly new phone and you might be surprised what you can get your hands on – for example, you can now buy a refurbished iPhone 12 for less than £500!

If you are buying a second-hand phone, you’ll need to think about what condition you’re prepared to accept. A pristine phone will look untouched, but it offers less of a saving than a phone that’s lived a little, and maybe picked up a couple of minor scuffs on the way. It’s also worth thinking about age. An older phone offers the biggest savings over new, but it’ll be missing features like 5G, and its battery life may not be as good as it was when new.

Whatever you decide, remember that all new phones bought through Mozillion have their full manufacturer warranty. And all our refurbished mobile phones are labs-inspected in a 90-point test, and have had their data destroyed by a certified process. Only then do we add the protection of our free 12-month warranty.

Google Pixel 5

Why buy? Future-proof and funky

Let’s not beat about the bush, Google’s Pixel 5 is far behind the best of the Android crop when it comes to outright performance. Its Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor was widely seen as a step backwards from the Pixel 4, and it can’t hold a candle to leading Android phones – let alone any recent iPhone.

With that major caveat out of the way, let’s focus on what it’s good at – almost everything else. Like all Pixel phones, the Pixel 5 offers a great set of features for the money. Perhaps the most obvious is its 6” OLED screen, which has a 90Hz refresh rate. There’s a double camera system offering 12.2MP wide and 16MP ultra-wide lenses, too. Inside there’s 5G support, alongside a substantial 4,080mAh battery, with everything protected by IP68 waterproofing.

As always with Pixel, Google makes it special with enhanced software features. These include major apps like Google Camera, along with more subtle enhancements like Personal Safety, and Caller ID with spam filtering. And this phone qualifies for Android updates and security fixes until at least October 2023, helping to give it long-term appeal.

Google replaced the Pixel 5 with the Pixel 6 in October 2021, and the last few new examples are selling fast. However, the price of refurbished Google Pixel 5 phones is falling. With 5G, and updates that will probably extend until Android 14, it’s about as future-proof as second-hand Android phones get.

OnePlus 8 Pro

Why buy? I’m sorry, how much?

Surely there’s some mistake? The OnePlus 8 Pro has a top-line specification, yet here it is in a list of budget phones. In fact we’re happy to confirm that, yes: you can really get your fingerprints all over its 6.5” OLED, 120Hz screen for less than £500. Officially, it’s £449 from OnePlus, but you can buy it new for less on Mozillion. And if you’re happy to consider a refurbished example, you might even pick it up for less than £300!

This is a seriously impressive phone. Aside from that gorgeous screen, it’s got a quad-camera setup with a 48MP maximum resolution. There’s a high-end Snapdragon 865 chip paired with 8GB of RAM, powering excellent 2D performance. And while the phone’s slightly less competitive in 3D benchmarks, it’s still plenty powerful enough to run taxing games well.

As if all that wasn’t enough, OnePlus is supporting the OnePlus 8 Pro with three major Android updates, and four years of security fixes. Taken alongside 5G support, that should keep it fresh for some time to come. If you want a premium Android phone for a song, a new or refurbished OnePlus 8 Pro makes a brilliant choice.

iPhone 11 Pro

Why buy?Future-proof, pro level, fast

You might have been expecting an iPhone in this list, but surely not the lovely iPhone 11 Pro? In fact, you can buy a refurbished iPhone 11 Pro or a refurbished iPhone 11 Pro Max for well within £500. That’s a flagship iPhone for less than half what you’d pay for the latest models.

Old phones often date quickly, but the iPhone 11 Pro still looks like a class act. Its A13 Bionic chip still trounces anything but newer iPhones, and its battery will comfortably take you through more than a day’s use. You get a triple-camera setup, with features like 4K video recording, 240-frame-per-second slo-mo, and Apple’s almost magical Night Mode. The iPhone 11 Pro’s 5.8” OLED screen has a higher resolution than even some new Android phones (we’re looking at you, Pixel 6). Upgrade to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and you get a big 6.5” screen, great for gaming on a budget.

OK, this phone misses out on 5G, and its cameras – while good – aren’t a patch on the iPhone 13 Pro. The latest iPhone is also much faster, but that’s hardly the point. Apple is likely to support this phone with updates until at least 2026. If you want to pay less for a great iPhone that will last, a reconditioned iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max is a brilliant choice.

Samsung Galaxy S21 5G

Why buy?A great phone, for less

Almost no ‘best of’ list is complete without the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, but even so it’s surprising to see it cropping up among budget phones. In truth, a new example will blow through your £500 budget and then some, but with the great Samsung Galaxy S21 5G deals on Mozillion, you can buy a refurbished Galaxy S21 5G and still have change for a new case.

You’ll want to protect this phone’s lovely 6.2” OLED screen. While it can’t quite match an iPhone for resolution, it’s enhanced by a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate – better than you’d get on the standard iPhone 13. And then there’s that triple rear camera system, comprising 12 megapixel wide and ultra-wide cameras, with a 64MP telephoto lens.

All good so far, then, but the Galaxy S21 5G has a trump card: its Samsung-designed Exynos 2100 processor is one of the fastest you’ll find in an Android phone. In 3D benchmarks it comes out somewhere around the speed of the iPhone SE (2020). In multi-core tests it’s not far short of the iPhone 11. All of that makes this a lot of phone for your money, and a great iPhone 12 alternative.

Why buy?Almost the latest iPhone

Wait, what? Surely not? Yes we know you can still buy the iPhone 12 new, and yes we know it’ll cost you more than £500, but move fast on the Mozillion marketplace and you’ll get a refurbished iPhone 12 within your budget. That means the latest design, 5G support, 6m of water resistance and almost the latest performance, all for around a third less than a new iPhone 13.

What’s not to love about this phone? OK, so its A14 Bionic processor is now a generation behind, but it’ll comprehensively out-slug anything except a newer iPhone. Yes, Apple’s improved the camera now, but the iPhone 12 will still grab a great shot from almost anything you throw at it. Yada yada battery life? Yes, the iPhone 13 is better, but you’ll still get all day from an iPhone 12, and when its battery’s flat, MagSafe chargers make wireless charging easy.

So, we still love the iPhone 12, and so does Apple – it’s likely to keep supporting it until at least 2027. A refurbished iPhone 12 may only just squeak inside your £500 budget, but grab one and it’s likely to provide a brilliant smartphone experience for several years to come.

Best phones under £250

We get it, £500 is still a lot of money. The good news is that if you’ve got less to spend, there’s still plenty to choose from. If you’re happy to compromise on performance, 5G or how old the phone you buy is, you can still pick up a bargain. Let us tempt you with the following five beauties.

Google Pixel 4a

Mozillion rating

Why buy? Good features, great value

We’re big fans of Google Pixel phones, and the Pixel 4a is one of the best all-rounders yet. Launched in August 2020 as a mid-range version of the Pixel 4, it was discontinued with the Pixel 6 launch in October 2021. While the last few new ones still cost around £350, you can buy a refurbished Google Pixel 4a for well under that. It’s no gaming powerhouse or pro filmmaking platform, but this phone does everything you could want from an everyday companion – and does it well.

Let’s start with what you don’t get. The Pixel 4a can’t offer 5G or wireless charging, and it’s not waterproofed at all. There’s no fancy camera system, and at 3,140mAh the battery isn’t huge. Its Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G is fairly limp too – although you’re unlikely to notice unless you want to run intensive 3D games.

This phone does offer a 5.8” OLED screen with 1,080×2,340 resolution. That works out at 443 pixels per inch (ppi) – almost a match for the 460ppi you’d get on an iPhone 13. Its low-key processor is kind to the battery, so it’ll easily last more than a day. Meanwhile, the 12.2MP rear camera is enhanced by Google Camera features, including a passable Night Mode and slo-mo options.

The Pixel 4a is compact by the standards of a modern Android phone – it’s a touch smaller, and 30 grams lighter than the iPhone 13. But perhaps best of all, this is among the first phones to get major Android updates. It’s already on Android 12, and is expected to go to at least Android 13 before Google stops updating it around August 2023. It might not excel at any one thing, but as a compact all-rounder, the Pixel 4a is great value.

Apple iPhone XS

Mozillion rating

Why buy? An iPhone for less than £250

Stick strictly to your £250 budget and your choice of iPhones is quite limited. Happily, the iPhone XS just squeaks in. Although it’s now three generations behind the curve, it’s still a great phone. While it doesn’t have 5G, Apple is likely to support it until at least 2025, keeping it safe and fresh with new iOS updates and security fixes.

This phone’s 5.8” OLED screen is a significant upgrade over the bog-standard LCD fitted to the newer iPhone 11 – it’s sharper, brighter, and is easier to read from a range of angles. In most other ways the iPhone XS lags a little behind, though. Probably most significantly, its dual-lens 12MP camera offers decent results, but iPhone cameras have improved markedly since. You’re most likely to notice the lack of 4K video on the front camera, and the fact there’s no Night Mode at all – this phone struggles in very dark conditions.

Happily, the iPhone XS had such a performance advantage when new that its ageing processor isn’t a problem. The A12 Bionic chip can still whip most mainstream Android phones. All this makes a refurbished iPhone XS a great budget choice, with one caveat: the oldest examples may have seen lots of use, so you should expect some loss of battery capacity.

iPhone SE (2020)

Why buy? The youngest iPhone you can afford

So, you really want an iPhone, but you need something as new as possible? The second-generation iPhone SE might be for you.

We’ll be honest: we don’t love this phone, and it makes no sense to buy it new – save up for a refurbished iPhone 12 mini instead. But if you want a nearly-new iPhone for less than £250, a refurbished iPhone SE (2020) is your only choice.

To be fair, this isn’t a bad phone. It’s genuinely small, and inside there’s the same A13 Bionic chip you’d find in an iPhone 11 – it’s faster than most of the Android competition. Other than that it’s underwhelming, though: its 4.7” LCD screen is tiny, the front and rear cameras are basic, and its battery life is a couple of hours behind what you’d get from an iPhone 12 mini.

Again, this wouldn’t be our choice – we’d take the iPhone XS, or keep an eye open for any iPhone 11 deals sneaking under £250. But if it has to be iOS, and you need it as new as possible, this is the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S10

Price Price Discontinued – buy for less on Mozillion

Why buy? A top-end Samsung phone for a song

If you’re after a high-end phone on a tight budget, you need to look a couple of generations back. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 was part of the flagship Galaxy S lineup announced in 2019. Since then we’ve had the S20 and the S21, so it’s no longer the latest thing, but a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S10 is still a thing of beauty – and it costs less than £200.

So what do you get for the money? First up, there’s a 6.1” OLED screen. So far so iPhone, but this one has a 1,440×3,040 resolution giving it 550ppi – more pixels than you can get from Apple. At the back there’s a triple-camera system offering 16MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP zoom, with all three supporting 4K video. Inside, everything’s powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9820 chip – it’s some way off the latest phones, but it’s not too shabby.

What’s missing? Chiefly 5G. If that’s a deal-breaker, try stretching your budget to a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. Samsung hasn’t always been the quickest with updates, but the S10 is slated to get Android 12 in the first half of 2022, giving it some long-term appeal. If you fancy a cruise in the flagship, this could be your chance.

Nokia 5.3

Price Less than £150 – buy Nokia phones for less on Mozillion

Mozillion rating

Why buy? A new phone well under your budget

What’s big, cheap, and great value for money? This budget Android phone from Nokia. Released in early 2020, the Nokia 5.3 launched with Android 10 – but because it’s an Android ONE phone, it qualifies for two years’ of operating system updates and at least three years of security. It’s already on Android 11, and is expected to get Android 12 soon.

At this price there are obviously some limitations. The huge 6.55” screen is only a 720×1,600 LCD, so it gives away a lot in image quality to the OLED screens in more expensive phones. Inside there’s only 64GB of storage and just 4GB of RAM, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 is nothing to brag about. However, with a quad-camera setup offering 4K video, wide, ultra-wide and macro photography, you still get a decent amount for your money.

This phone won’t win many prizes or admiring looks, but if you want a cheap new phone running the latest version of Android, it’s still a good choice for the money.
