Why buy an Apple iPhone 12 mini?

Mozillion Apple iPhone 12 mini review

Ridiculously fast and smooth
Beautiful photos on a beautiful screen
Praise be! A genuinely compact phone!

Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone 12 mini:

iPhone 12 - same phone, slightly bigger
iPhone 13 mini - the newer, better version
Motorola Razr 5G - a different approach to small

Introduction

If you’re a fan of compact phones, Apple has you covered. The iPhone 12 mini is genuinely smaller than most other smartphones, but nonetheless offers the full iPhone 12 experience. Blistering performance, 5G connectivity, and a sumptuous screen - you can tick them all off. More than just a pint-sized icon, the new iPhone 12 mini is quietly practical too. It’s water resistant, has an all-day battery, and now supports a range of mag-safe accessories.

Design

The iPhone continues to set the benchmark for beautiful smartphones, and the iPhone 12 mini simply shrinks a winning formula. Its gorgeous Super Retina XDR screen extends almost right to the edge of the phone, helping keep it to a trim 147x72mm.

The iPhone 12 mini keeps Apple’s Lightning connector for charging and data, but there’s also support for new MagSafe wireless chargers. The MagSafe system supports a range of other accessories including cases and car mounts, helping keep wires out of the picture.

Camera

The iPhone 12 mini camera is one of the best you’ll find on any mobile phone. Its 12 megapixel system comprises two cameras providing wide and ultra wide angles - but it misses out on the third, telephoto camera only found on iPhone 12 Pro models. There’s optical image stabilisation, with up to a 5X software zoom. The results are sensational in almost any lighting conditions.

Video

The iPhone 12 mini deals out the same great video quality as its bigger sibling. It can record 4K video at up to sixty frames per second (60fps), or HDR video with Dolby Vision at 30fps. There’s optical image stabilisation too, so you can get a steady shot even when you’re moving about.

Display

The smallest iPhone 12 has less room for a screen, but that hasn’t stopped Apple cramming in a 5.4” beauty that stretches almost edge to edge. The OLED screen packs in an incredible 476 pixels per inch - more than any other iPhone 12! The result? Sharper text and crisper, vibrant images, in one of the best small phone screens you’ll find.

Processor

All the new iPhone 12 models benefit from the Apple A14 Bionic chip. Apple says it’s the fastest processor in any smartphone, and who are we to doubt it? Capable of one trillion operations a second, the A14 might seem like overkill for those group WhatsApp messages, but it helps make the iPhone 12 mini a formidable gaming, photography and filmmaking platform.

Battery

With less room for the battery, the iPhone 12 mini can’t quite match its bigger siblings for endurance. It’ll still play back 15 hours of video on one charge, though - just a couple of hours shy of the iPhone 12. When the battery is spent, you can charge it to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Colours & Options

Apple remains one of the few smartphone makers to bother with more than a couple of colours. The iPhone 12 mini can be had in the traditional white or black, along with red, green, purple or blue. You can buy cases that clash or compliment, and other MagSafe accessories such as a wireless charging cradle for the car.

The cheapest iPhone 12 mini is the cheapest iPhone 12 you can buy. It comes with just 64GB of storage, but you can pay more for 128GB or 256GB. iPhones have never had an SD card slot, so you can’t expand the storage later. You won’t find earbuds or a charger in the iPhone 12 mini box. The phone has no 3.5mm socket, but you can buy EarPods with a Lightning connector if you’re not ready to go wireless.

iPhone 12 Mini FAQs

The iPhone 12 mini is already out! It was unveiled in October 2020, and launched the following month.

iPhone 12 mini prices start at £699, which offers 64GB of storage. The 256GB model will set you back £849. Of course, these are Apple’s official prices - you can buy new iPhones for less at Mozillion!
The iPhone 12 mini measures 132x64x7.4mm - that’s about 15mm shorter and 7mm less wide than the regular iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 mini has a 5.4”, 2,340x1,080 screen, while the iPhone 12’s measures 6.1”, with 2,532x1,170 pixels. At 133 grams, the mini weighs 29 grams less than the regular iPhone. With less space for a battery, the iPhone mini might go a couple of hours less between charges. Other than that, the phones have identical specs and features.

Yes. Apple says the iPhone 12 mini can survive water up to six metres deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t go swimming with one, it’ll definitely shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.

Like previous iPhones, the iPhone 12 mini has a Lightning connector. You can use the supplied USB-C to Lightning cable to top it up from a compatible power source. An old USB-A to Lightning cable will let you recharge an iPhone 12 mini from a wider range of existing chargers, power banks or vehicles. You’ll need a 20W or better power adaptor for the quickest charge. The iPhone 12 mini also supports wireless charging through MagSafe branded stands, mats and car mounts.
MagSafe is Apple’s new magnetic standard for attaching accessories. The range includes cases, wallets, stands and wireless chargers.

No. The iPhone 12 family also has no 3.5mm audio socket, so you’ll need wireless headphones, or EarPods with a Lightning connector.

The iPhone 12 mini has a pocket-friendly 5.4” screen, and measures 132x64x7.4mm. It weighs in at 133 grams.

It does! All iPhone 12 models are 5G ready.

We think so! It’s just as powerful as bigger iPhones, and matches the full-size iPhone 12 in every area except screen size and battery life. If you prefer a smaller phone, or just want to save £100 compared to the regular iPhone 12, it’s a great choice.
To turn off an iPhone 12 mini, press and hold the side button with either volume button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the side button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.
Briefly press and hold the side button along with the volume up button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.
To video what’s on your screen, you first need to add Screen Record to the Control Centre. Tap Settings, Tap Control Centre, scroll to Screen Recording and tap the green cross next to it. With this done, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Record icon. If you want to narrate the recording, hold down the icon and switch the microphone on. Recording begins after three seconds.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to view recent app previews. Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close, then swipe it up off the top of the screen.
You can check your battery at any time by swiping down from the top right to open Control Centre. If you need at-a-glance checking, add a widget by tapping and holding the screen until the phone icons start dancing. Tap +, select Batteries in the widgets popup, choose the style you want, then tap Add Widget to add it to your screen.
First you need to set Apple Pay up: open Settings and tap Wallet & Apple Pay. Read the Apple Pay overview, then tap Continue and tap Credit or Debit Card to add a card. Either use a card that’s already associated with your Apple account, or tap Add a Different Card, scan the card, then tap Continue. Once you’ve provided the card’s three-digit security code and agreed any additional terms and conditions, tap Continue to finish the process. You can use Apple Pay on any contactless terminal. Double-press the side button on the phone, select your card if you’ve more than one set up, authenticate with Face ID, then place the phone near the terminal just as you would a payment card.
