It’s ironic that when we all talk about ‘a great phone’, we aren’t thinking about phones at all.

Why buy an Apple iPhone 11 Pro?

Mozillion Apple iPhone 11 Pro review

A strong performer if you don’t need 5G
Great features
Lush OLED screen

Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone 11 Pro:

iPhone 12 - newer and faster, with an even better screen
iPhone 11 - a cheaper alternative
Google Pixel 5 - less stylish, but newer with 5G

Introduction

The iPhone 11 Pro was launched alongside the iPhone 11 in September 2019. Despite this, it’s surprisingly different to the basic model, with big upgrades to its screen, camera system, battery, storage and water resistance. Despite its superior features, the iPhone 11 Pro is smaller than the iPhone 11, and even marginally smaller than the iPhone 12. If you can live without 5G, it makes a great alternative.

Design

iPhones have always led the way for style, and despite its bigger size the iPhone 11 Pro Max is no exception. Crafted from surgical grade stainless steel with glass front and back, the phone looks as fresh today as it did at launch. Like other recent iPhones, the iPhone 11 Pro Max shrugs off dust and water - it’s tested to a depth of four metres for up to 30 minutes.

Camera

The iPhone 11 Pro adds a third telephoto camera to the iPhone 11’s dual 12 megapixel array. The system offers a 4x optical zoom, with up to 10x of digital zoom. Features including optical image stabilisation and a brilliant night mode mean that the iPhone 11 Pro deals superbly with holiday snaps, and offers fantastic portrait shots.

Video

If you want to shoot video like a pro, the iPhone 11 Pro is game. It can handle both 1080p HD and 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second - enough to capture every detail. Optical image stabilisation helps to keep everything steady, even when using the 6X digital zoom. You can even shoot slo-mo at up to 240 frames per second!

Display

The iPhone 11 Pro’s 5.8” screen is a major upgrade over the 6.1” screen found on the standard iPhone. Though slightly smaller, its OLED technology makes for far superior brightness and contrast. At 458 pixels per inch (ppi) compared to 326ppi, it also produces crisper and more detailed images. In fact, it’s far more comparable to the screen you’ll find in an iPhone 12.

Processor

The iPhone 11 Pro uses Apple’s own A13 Bionic chip. It’s not as fast as the latest generation A14 Bionic, but the iPhone 11 Pro can hold its own against all but the iPhone 12, or the fastest Android competition. There’s still plenty of grunt for games, multimedia and creativity.

Battery

Apple’s battery and processor optimisations, together with the efficient OLED screen, mean that the iPhone 11 Pro can play video for up to 18 hours on a charge. There’s support for Qi wireless charging, which helps you grab a convenient top-up. Alternatively, use the Lightning connector with a 20W adaptor and you’ll charge to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Colours & Options

The iPhone 11 Pro comes in four colours only found on Pro series models: gold, silver, Space Grey, and the previously unseen Midnight Green. Storage capacity starts at 64GB, but there are also 256GB and 512GB models.

The iPhone 11 Pro supports Qi wireless charging, but not the MagSafe cases and mounts designed for the iPhone 12. As with other iPhones, there’s still a huge choice of cases, holders, wallets and the like. You can find an accessory for almost any need!

iPhone 11 Pro FAQs

The iPhone 11 Pro was unveiled and launched in September 2019.
You can no longer buy a new iPhone 11 Pro from the Apple website, but you can find great iPhone 11 Pro deals on the Mozillion marketplace.
There are lots of differences. Most significantly, the iPhone 11 Pro has a slightly smaller, and much better OLED screen. It’s smaller and a bit lighter overall, and has a stainless steel rather than aluminium chassis that’s waterproof to twice the depth (four metres). At the back you’ll find three cameras rather than two, and with twice the storage you’ll have more room for pictures and videos.
No. It’s slightly smaller and lighter. The iPhone 11 Pro Max is bigger than both.
No. The phones are different sizes.
Yes. Apple says the iPhone 11 Pro can survive water up to four metres deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t go swimming with one, it should shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.
Yes, you can charge the iPhone 11 Pro with an old iPhone charger, or from almost any USB port or charger. You’ll need a USB-A to Lightning cable - you may already have one from a previous iPhone.
No, but the box contains EarPods with a Lightning connector.
The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8” screen. It measures 144x72x8.1mm and weighs 188 grams, so it’s a bit smaller and lighter than the iPhone 11. It’s very nearly the same size and weight as the iPhone 12 Pro.
The screen has a resolution of 2,436x1,125 - that’s 2.7 megapixels, maths fans. The rear triple camera system offers 12MP, as does the single camera at the front.
All iPhone 11 models can shoot 4K video using either the front or rear cameras. However, none of them has a 4K screen.
No. You’ll need an iPhone 12 model for that.
It depends how you use it. It’s plenty for everyday use, provided you have small photo or music libraries or you store data in the cloud. If you take lots of videos, play lots of rich games or want to keep multimedia on the phone, you might need more.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.

There are four. One front-mounted 12 megapixel (MP) camera covers selfies and FaceTime duties. At the rear there’s a 12MP three-camera setup with optical image stabilisation.

You’ll get the phone, a USB-C to Lightning cable for charging, and a pair of EarBuds with a lightning connector. There’s no charger or case.
The iPhone 11 Pro is significantly better. It’s smaller and lighter, has a much better screen, is waterproof to twice the depth, has a better camera, and offers more storage.
To turn off any iPhone 11, press and hold the side button with either volume button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone’s not responding, you can try forcing a restart. Quickly press volume up, followed by volume down, then press and hold the side button. Release it when the Apple logo appears.
Briefly press and release the side button along with the volume up button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.
To video what’s on your screen, you first need to add Screen Record to the Control Centre. Tap Settings, Tap Control Centre, scroll to Screen Recording and tap the green cross next to it. With this done, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Record icon. If you want to narrate the recording, hold down the icon and switch the microphone on. Recording begins after three seconds.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to view recent app previews. Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close, then swipe it up off the top of the screen.
You can check your battery at any time by swiping down from the top right to open Control Centre. If you need at-a-glance checking, add a widget by tapping and holding the screen until the phone icons start dancing. Tap +, select Batteries in the widgets popup, choose the style you want, then tap Add Widget to add it to your screen.
