Why buy an Apple iPhone XR?

Mozillion Apple iPhone XR review

One of the cheapest iPhones you can still buy new
Big choice of colours
Looks like an iPhone 11!

Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone XR:

iPhone 11 - is an iPhone 11!
iPhone 12 - smaller, faster and much better
Google Pixel 4a - a newer Android alternative - for less!

Introduction

The iPhone XR was announced alongside the iPhone XS and XS Max in September 2018. It’s a mid-range phone, with a more basic screen and camera, less storage space, and less effective waterproofing. The new iPhone XR inherited its ‘bezel-less’ design from the iPhone X that preceded it. While its specification looks dated now, the phone itself still looks gorgeous.

Design

The iPhone XR’s design is something of a classic, even among iPhones. A big screen, running almost to the edge of a mid-sized phone - the look was so successful Apple left it unchanged for the iPhone 11 that followed. At 151x76x8.3mm this is a mid-sized phone, but it’s heavier and bigger than either the iPhone XS or the iPhone 12.

Camera

The iPhone XR has a single 12 megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens. While it’s less sophisticated than the double camera systems on the iPhone XS and XS Max, it received the same sensor upgrade - which improved image quality and low light performance compared to earlier iPhones. With a single lens there’s no optical zoom, but the 5x digital zoom does make the camera more flexible.

The iPhone XR deals with selfies using the same 7MP front camera as the iPhone XS models - a step down from the 12MP you’d get on even the basic iPhone 11. Note that some examples of the iPhone XR don’t have Face ID - we list these separately on the marketplace to avoid confusion.

Video

Like other recent iPhones, the iPhone XR’s rear camera can shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. There’s optical image stabilisation to help banish shakes, and 3x digital zoom to add to the flexibility. While the front camera doesn’t support 4K, it can still shoot 1080p video at up to 60fps.

Display

Next to the rich OLED displays fitted to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, the iPhone XR’s LCD screen looks ordinary. Using older technology, the 1,792x828 resolution, 6.1” screen offers only 326 pixels per inch, so it’s a little less sharp. Apple carried it over to the standard iPhone 11, but from the iPhone 12, all iPhone variants got an OLED upgrade.

Processor

Other than its screen, the iPhone XR’s weakness is probably its processor, which is a couple of generations behind. There’s nothing wrong with Apple’s A12 Bionic chip - the iPhone XR deals well with most games and apps - but it can’t match today’s flagship phones. In fact, it’s slower than the A13 processor at the heart of the lowly iPhone SE 2020.

Battery

Despite its older screen and processor technology, the iPhone XR offers strong battery life, promising up to 16 hours of video playback on a charge. A refurbished iPhone XR should still perform at a similar level, but the battery may have lost some of its capacity since new.

Colours & Options

The iPhone XR was available in six colours: black, white, red, blue, yellow and coral. Several of these are notably bolder and brighter than the pastel shades typical on newer iPhones. The iPhone XR was available only with 64GB or 128GB of storage. There were no earphones in the box, and from October 2020 each new iPhone XR no longer came with a power adaptor.

The iPhone XR supports Qi wireless charging, or you can top it up using a USB to Lightning cable. And as with every iPhone, there’s a huge range of cases, mounts and other accessories available.

iPhone XR FAQs

The iPhone XR was unveiled in September 2018, and launched in October 2018.
The iPhone XR was first sold in October 2018. It’s still on sale now, although the 256GB model was discontinued in September 2019.

The iPhone XR is a mainstream iPhone that replaced the iPhone 8. It was the first ‘ordinary’ iPhone to get Apple’s new ‘bezel-less’ design, meaning it was the first mainstream iPhone with a larger screen, and the first to feature the new Face ID authentication technology. The iPhone XR was produced alongside the iPhone XS, a flagship phone with a higher specification. Although the XS has been discontinued, the XR remains available as of July 2021.
The iPhone XS is better than the iPhone XR, which is cheaper and slightly larger. The iPhone XR has a more basic screen (LCD rather than OLED), a more simple camera system, less storage, and is waterproofed to a slightly lower standard. Both phones share the same processor. However, while you can still buy a new iPhone XR, the iPhone XS has been discontinued.
They’re exactly the same size and weight, and have the same 6.1” LCD screen. However, the iPhone 11 is newer, and better in several ways. Perhaps most significantly it has a faster processor. It also has a superior dual-camera system with night mode, and a 12MP front camera (as opposed to 7MP on the iPhone XR).
It’s hard to say definitively. The XR is newer and has a faster processor. It also has a longer battery life. However, the iPhone X is smaller, has a higher resolution OLED screen and comes with a better camera.
Yes, it’s a good phone, combining a low price with Apple’s newer ‘bezel-less’ design. It’s beginning to show its age, though, with a processor that’s two generations behind the one in the iPhone 12 range. The screen is another weak point - it’s a 1,792x828 resolution LCD. The iPhone 12 has a far superior 2,532x1,170 OLED screen.
The cheapest iPhone XR has 64GB of storage and costs £499. The 128GB model costs £549. Of course, these are Apple’s prices - you’ll find much better iPhone XR deals, including certified refurbished iPhone XR phones, on the Mozillion marketplace!
The iPhone XR has a 6.1” screen. It measures 151x76x8.3mm and weighs 194 grams. It’s the same size and weight as the iPhone 11, and a bit bigger and heavier than the iPhone 12.
It’s 6.1” (15.5cm) across the diagonal.
It’s 150.9mm (5.94 inches) long.
Yes, it’s exactly the same size and weight as the iPhone 11.
Yes. Apple says the iPhone XR can survive water up to a metre deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t have a shower with one, it should shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.
Yes, it supports Qi wireless charging. You can also charge using the supplied USB-C to Lightning cable, but you’ll need a power adaptor with a USB-C output. An old USB-A to Lightning cable will let you recharge an iPhone XR from a wider range of existing chargers, power banks or vehicles. You’ll need a 20W or better power adaptor for the quickest charge.
No. You’ll need an iPhone 12 for that.
The iPhone X has three microphones. There’s one behind the holes at the bottom near the Lightning connector. One is in the front camera notch, while the last is on the rear camera mounting.
No. The iPhone XR also has no 3.5mm audio socket, so you’ll need wireless headphones, or EarPods with a Lightning connector.
Apple says you’ll get up to 16 hours of video playback.
Yes and no. While there’s only room for a single nano-SIM, the phone supports a second eSIM. Provided your phone network supports eSIMs, you can add a second SIM digitally and use dual SIM features.
To turn off an iPhone XR, press and hold the side button with either volume button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.
If the phone’s not responding, you can try forcing a restart. Quickly press volume up, followed by volume down, then press and hold the side button. Release it when the Apple logo appears.
Briefly press and release the side button along with the volume up button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.
You can check your battery at any time by swiping down from the top right to open Control Centre. If you need at-a-glance checking, add a widget by tapping and holding the screen until the phone icons start dancing. Tap +, select Batteries in the widgets popup, choose the style you want, then tap Add Widget to add it to your screen.
To video what’s on your screen, you first need to add Screen Record to the Control Centre. Tap Settings, Tap Control Centre, scroll to Screen Recording and tap the green cross next to it. With this done, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Record icon. If you want to narrate the recording, hold down the icon and switch the microphone on. Recording begins after three seconds.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to view recent app previews. Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close, then swipe it up off the top of the screen.
You probably set Siri up when you set the phone up - try saying ‘Hey Siri’, or pressing the side button. If it doesn’t respond, you’ll need to open Settings and tap Siri & Search. Now enable Listen for “Hey Siri” or Press Side Button for Siri, after which the commands should work.
First you need to set ApplePay up: open Settings and tap Wallet & Apple Pay. Read the ApplePay overview, then tap Continue and tap Credit or Debit Card to add a card. Either use a card that’s already associated with your Apple account, or tap Add a Different Card, scan the card, then tap Continue. Once you’ve provided the card’s three-digit security code and agreed any additional terms and conditions, tap Continue to finish the process. You can use ApplePay on any contactless terminal. Double-press the side button on the phone, select your card if you’ve more than one set up, authenticate with Face ID, then place the phone near the terminal just as you would a payment card.
To backup your phone to iCloud, open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud followed by iCloud Backup. When you turn iCloud Backup on, your phone is backed up daily whenever it’s connected to power and Wi-Fi, and locked.
The iPhone XR is unlocked with Face ID. Simply look at the front camera and it should unlock. If it doesn’t, remove anything covering your face and wipe the phone’s screen notch (which houses the Face ID sensors). If Face ID still isn’t working, enter the passcode to unlock the phone.
Use the supplied cable to connect it to any USB-C charger. Alternatively, use a USB-A to Lightning cable to charge from any charger, device or vehicle equipped with a suitable port. You can also charge the iPhone XR from a Qi compatible wireless charging pad.
Your iPhone’s screen should rotate automatically between portrait and landscape modes, provided you’re using a compatible app. If not, swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Centre, then tap the Portrait Orientation Lock button - it looks like a padlock surrounded by a circular arrow.
