Mozillion Apple iPhone 8 Plus review

A cheap way to get a big iPhone
Screen and camera upgrades over iPhone 8
Still gets software updates

Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone 8 Plus:

iPhone XS - bigger, better screen in a smaller phone
iPhone XS Max - massive screen, much faster
Google Pixel 4 XL - massive screen, much newer

Introduction

Apple launched the iPhone 8 Plus in September 2017, at the same time that it announced the flagship iPhone X. While the latter’s design grabbed all the attention, the new iPhone 8 Plus was a significant step forward from the iPhone 7 Plus. In came fast charging, Qi wireless charging, a glass back, and improvements to the camera and displays, while the phone shared much of the iPhone X’s internals.

Design

The iPhone 8 Plus was the last phablet version of a mainstream iPhone. From the iPhone XS Max onwards, Apple has only offered plus-sized versions of its flagship phones. It’s also the last iPhone phablet without a ‘bezel-less’ design. As a result, there’s much less room for a truly large screen. Although the iPhone 8 Plus is roughly as big as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it only manages a 5.5” display - the iPhone 12 Pro Max squeezes in 6.7”.

Camera

The iPhone 8 Plus shares the dual-camera system found on the back of the iPhone X. It covers wide and telephoto angles, rather than ultra-wide, so it might be harder to fit everyone into a group shot. On the plus side, there’s a huge 10x digital zoom range. Unlike the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus does benefit from a portrait mode.

At the front, a 7MP camera handles selfie and FaceTime duty. The iPhone 8 Plus deals with authentication using its fingerprint sensor - it doesn’t support Face ID.

Video

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus introduced improved video capabilities, with the rear camera now able to shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. Again, although there’s no ultra-wide lens, there’s a big 6x digital zoom and optical image stabilisation to help make up for it. The front camera doesn’t support 4K, but it can still shoot 1080p video at up to 30fps. Unfortunately, the iPhone 8 can only record video with mono audio, rather than in stereo.

Display

The iPhone 8 Plus has a near-identical LCD screen to the iPhone 7 Plus. Measuring 5.5”, it offers 401 pixels per inch - mid-way between the 326ppi in the iPhone 8 and the 458ppi found on the iPhone X. While it’s still a good screen, it’s worth noting that it’s smaller and less detailed than the 5.8” OLED found in the iPhone X. If you mainly want a big detailed screen, you’d do better with that.

Processor

The iPhone 8 Plus is a massive leap forward from the iPhone 7 Plus when it comes to processing power. However, its A11 Bionic chip is now three generations behind the A14 found in the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 8 Plus deals reasonably well with today’s games and apps, but it may not perform strongly on the most demanding ones.

Battery

With more space for a bigger battery, the iPhone 8 Plus offered an extra hour of video playback compared to the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. New it could manage 14 hours on a single charge. A refurbished iPhone 8 Plus should still perform well, but the battery may not last as long as it did when new.

Colours & Options

Apple offered the iPhone 8 Plus in silver, Space Gray and gold, and when it came to storage there was a choice of 64GB or 128GB. Each new iPhone 8 Plus came with a standard charger, along with EarPods with a Lightning connector. As with other iPhones, there’s an almost limitless market for iPhone 8 Plus accessories.

The iPhone 8 Plus was unveiled and launched in September 2017. It was discontinued in April 2020.
The iPhone 8 Plus has a 5.5” screen. It measures 158x78x7.5mm and weighs 202 grams. It’s about the same size as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but that crams in a 6.7” screen.
It’s 6.24x3.07x0.30 inches.
It’s 158.4mm (6.24 inches) long.
It measures 5.5” across the diagonal. Although that was big at the time, the move to ‘bezel-less’ design means that newer iPhones have much bigger screens. Even the iPhone 12 mini can match it now, with a 5.4” screen in a far smaller phone.
The iPhone 8 Plus is significantly bigger than the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 Plus is fractionally smaller and lighter than the iPhone 8 Plus.
Yes. Apple says the iPhone 8 Plus can survive water up to one metre deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t shower with one, it should shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.
Yes, it supports Qi wireless charging. You can also charge using the supplied USB-C to Lightning cable, but you’ll need a power adaptor with a USB-C output. An old USB-A to Lightning cable will let you recharge an iPhone 8 Plus from a wider range of existing chargers, power banks or vehicles. You’ll need a 20W or better power adaptor for the quickest charge.
No, it doesn’t have a headphone jack. You can only use the iPhone 8 Plus with wired headphones if they have a Lightning connector.
To turn off an iPhone 8 Plus, press and hold the side button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.
If the phone’s not responding, you can try forcing a restart. Quickly press volume up, followed by volume down, then press and hold the side button. Release it when the Apple logo appears.
Briefly press and release the side button along with the home button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.
To backup your phone to iCloud, open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud followed by iCloud Backup. When you turn iCloud Backup on, your phone is backed up daily whenever it’s connected to power and Wi-Fi, and locked.
