Best big phones 31/01/22

When it comes to entertainment, there are times when only total immersion will do. Epic movies and pulsating games demand serious screen real estate, together with pin sharp resolution, silky refresh rates, and Dolby Atmos through beefy stereo speakers.

But how do you choose? Well, we’ve been kind enough to spend days on end watching entertainment on your behalf, and the result is our Best Big Phones Guide. You’re welcome.

All the phones in this guide have a screen size of at least 6.5” across the diagonal, creating a bigger picture suitable for keen boxset bingers – and better for sharing too. They also have a high resolution, meaning they have a crisper image, and can cram in more information. That’s useful if you’re into gaming, and it’ll give you better picture quality in films. It also generally means less scrolling in long menus, and a bigger workspace for editing precision in advanced multimedia apps.

So, whether you need more screen for Succession, more real estate for Real Estate Tycoon, or top specs for Top Gun: Maverick, here’s our guide to the best big phones.

Why buy?The best big smartphone you can buy

The cheaper optionBuy an iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is arguably the best big phone you can buy. It has the same crushing performance and exquisite camera you’ll find on the iPhone 13 Pro, but with an upgraded 6.7” OLED screen.

So, what about that display? Unlike the regular iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro Max gets Apple’s new ProMotion adaptive refresh rate technology, which goes up to a super-smooth 120Hz when needed, or down to a battery-saving 10Hz when not. For the most part, this is a fantastic display, offering class-leading brightness and contrast, together with characteristically wide viewing angles.

It’s worth pointing out, however, that this screen’s 1,284×2,778 resolution means it can’t display quite as much detail as some other big rivals. While that could be an issue if you often work with lots of information – a spreadsheet app, for example – it’s still more than enough to show full HD content. And while you might fit more of your game world on the screen with some other large phones, nothing comes close to the frame rates you’ll get from the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s incredible processor.

This is an insanely expensive phone, and there could be better options if you’re mostly interested in multimedia or detailed apps. If you can live with slower performance and an inferior camera, you could save money with a refurbished iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, if you want the best big phone for games or moviemaking, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is unrivalled.

Why buy?One of the best big Android phones

The cheaper optionBuy a Galaxy S21 Plus 5G – almost as big, but lower resolution

If an iPhone 13 Pro Max just isn’t big enough, allow us to suggest the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. Built around a simply massive 6.8” screen, it’s a flagship Android phone with blistering performance and a stunning camera system.

Like the iPhone, the S21 Ultra 5G has a variable refresh rate that goes up to 120Hz – perfect for smooth playback and gaming. However, unlike Apple’s finest, this phone boasts an amazing 1,440×3,200 pixels – that’s almost a third more than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

That’s still some way short of 4K resolution, but you might see a benefit compared to lower resolution screens if you’re playing 4K content. You might also get more from games, for example being able to fit in more of the game world, or more information on in-game menus.

This phone uses Samsung’s own Exynos 2100 processor, and it’s a bit of a beast. While it can’t match the latest iPhones – snapping at the heels of the iPhone 11 in 3D benchmarks – it’s a match for all but its fastest Android competitors. Add in 5G, waterproofing, and a promise that updates will continue as far as Android 14, and this has to be one of the best Android phones of any size.

Google Pixel 6 Pro

Why buy? Incredible screen and camera

The cheaper option Look at a refurbished iPhone 12 Pro Max

The Pixel 6 Pro is Google’s biggest phone yet, or at least, its 6.7” screen is the biggest yet found on a Pixel. It’s a cracker, too, featuring a 1,440×3,120 resolution that helps it render beautifully sharp images. As you’d expect from a high-end OLED, there’s a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and stunning brightness, contrast and colour.

This phone isn’t all about its screen, though. It’s distinctive to look at, and Google’s own Tensor processor gives it a few party tricks you won’t find anywhere else. These range from automatic transcription and translation services, through to Magic Eraser – which automatically touches out unwanted parts of your photos.

Like other Pixels, the Pixel 6 Pro will be one of the first phones to get security and operating system updates. The Pixel 6 range launched with Android 12, and Google promises updates to October 2024 – probably including Android 15.

While its looks aren’t for everyone, and it won’t win every performance drag race, Google’s first truly high-end phone performs well and feels different. Enhanced by Pixel-only features and Google support, it’s a big phone to hold on to.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G

Why buy?Fantastic displays and a good camera

The cheaper optionBuy a refurbished Galaxy Fold 5G

Here’s another way of looking at a big phone: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3 5G offers a decent 6.2” display, with a stunning party trick – unfold it to reveal a colossal 7.6” tablet. This is the third generation of the Galaxy Z Fold, and Samsung reckons it has nailed the mechanics of getting the screen to fold without damage over the phone’s lifetime. It’s protected by glass, rather than earlier models’ plastic, and this time there’s even waterproofing to 1.5 metres.

This is just about the most portable way of travelling with the biggest possible screen. The vast main screen offers nearly twice the area of other phones, giving you a huge workspace for complex apps, or just a bigger view when gaming or watching movies. Unusually, there’s no camera punch hole to break up the scene – although unfortunately the under display camera isn’t the best.

Happily, Samsung hasn’t messed up anywhere else. There’s meaty performance, 5G support, and even reasonable battery life – despite the huge screen. This is an expensive phone, and it’s probably overkill for most users, but if you want the biggest phone that fits in your pocket, this is it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G

Why buy?A huge, high spec phablet for less

The cheaper optionCheck out a refurbished iPhone 11 Pro Max

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G has nothing less than a 6.9” display, making it one of the biggest smartphones you can buy. Or at least, you could, until Samsung discontinued the Note lineup. Now if you fancy one, you’ll need to look for a refurbished Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G. So why would you want to?

Well, there’s no getting away from that screen. It’s a beautiful OLED panel offering a 1,440×3,088 resolution, and up to a 120Hz refresh rate. But more than that, it works with the supplied S Pen to support a whole range of inputs. From note-taking, through drawing, documenting or just scribbling, this is a great way to capture your thoughts.

At the back there’s a three-camera setup featuring a mighty 108MP wide lens and a 5x optical zoom. Processing power comes from Samsung’s Exynos 990 chip which, while not the best, still gives plenty of grunt. And the phone’s big 4,500mAh battery ensures you can make the most of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G all day long.

This isn’t the newest device. Launched in August 2020, it shipped with Android 10 and is currently upgraded to Android 11. Android 12 is expected around the end of 2021, and Samsung has pledged to include a further update to Android 13, along with security updates until around August 2024. All this, together with 5G, makes this a cheaper big phone option with truly long-term appeal.

OnePlus 8 Pro

Why buy?Cheap, but still fast enough for most games

The cheaper optionGo much cheaper and you’ll struggle with recent games

If you can’t stretch to one of the other phones on our list, you could still save money on one of several discontinued high-end phones that are still up to all but the most demanding games. The OnePlus 8 Pro is a great example, combining a large, high-res screen with the relatively high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip. Ignore OnePlus’ own price – you can find it for much less on the Mozillion marketplace.

The OnePlus 8 Pro isn’t as fast as today’s high-end phones, but it’s not bad, ranking around 30th fastest in Geekbench 5’s multi-core CPU test. With around 1,100 points in the taxing 3DMark Wild Life Extreme benchmark, it has slightly more than half the 3D power of today’s fastest Android phones, meaning it’s still capable of smooth framerates and slick gameplay in all but the most demanding games.

And there’s more to this phone than a decent processor. Its 6.6” AMOLED screen offers 1,440×3,168 pixels, with a slick 120Hz refresh rate and an under-display fingerprint sensor. OnePlus was particularly proud of the display, claiming an Apple-beating 1,300 nit brightness, with high colour accuracy.

The OnePlus 8 Pro doesn’t disappoint if you’re into photography. Its 48-megapixel (MP) main camera is teamed with a 16MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro unit. There’s even a 16MP selfie camera. Best of all, there’s hours of power for everything, thanks to a huge 4,500mAh battery.

While the OnePlus 8 Pro can’t quite keep pace with the speed of the latest phones, it still offers loads for the money. If you can’t stretch to something newer, a refurbished OnePlus 8 Pro is still a solid gaming phone for less.
