iPhone 13 - older model, reliable and more affordable
The iPhone 14 has launched with some major upgrades, including an enhanced TrueDepth camera, emergency satellite communications, Crash Detection and a vastly improved battery life. In addition, all four iPhone 14 models have stereo speakers and spatial audio support which, in movies and music that support it, adds a surround-sound effect. In fact, Apple Music has an entire spatial audio playlist to explore this further and there are titles on Netflix, Amazon and other streaming services to completely immerse yourself in thanks to this game changing upgrade.
The iPhone 14 benefits from a 6.1in Super Retina XDR display with a 2532 x 1170, 460ppi resolution. There are some cool new colours to choose from and a 2 gram weight loss to gloat about. The tough Ceramic Shield covering the display and the water and dust resistance are what you would expect from a smartphone of this calibre and are an excellent and intuitive design feature for everyday use.
The enhanced main camera on the iPhone 14 and improved image processing allow you to capture even more sensational shots in all kinds of light — especially low light. The front camera, also 12MP, now also benefits from autofocus which means solid group selfies are much easier to achieve. There is also a new imaging pipeline and Photonic Engine which prioritises Deep Fusion neural image processing earlier than previously which means it can work with uncompressed images.
It is sticking with the same two cameras as the iPhone 13, one of which is main wide-angle, the other is ultra-wide-angle.
Like the rest of the iPhone 14 line up, this model can shoot up to 4K video, and Cinematic Mode has now been pumped up to support 4K at 30fps. Apple has included a new Action Mode on the iPhone 14 (as well as the iPhone 14 Pro) which provides extreme stabilisation for smooth footage. This means that even if you are running and attempting to capture content, you should be able to record without the worry of camera shake. If video is important to you, you will know how vital it is to capture smooth footage which is why Apple have also introduced the option of choosing 24fps or 30fps (frames per second).
The iPhone 14 has a 6.1 inch display, in comparison to the Plus which is 6.7 inches. Both versions have a Super Retina XDR OLED display though and the splash, water and dust resistance ratings remain robust. The display encompasses an updated TrueDepth camera with a better light-gathering sensor, the ability to autofocus, an IR sensor, flood illuminator - above all of that sits a speaker. The other speaker is found on the bottom of the phone.
Under the hood of the iPhone 14 is the A15 Bionic processor which, with a 5 core GPU, powers all the latest features and makes games and AR apps feel ultra fluid. This is further augmented by the updated internal design which delivers better thermal efficiency so you can remain immersed in the action for longer.
The upgraded battery life on the iPhone 14 equates to 20 hours of video playback, 16 hours of streamed video, and 80 hours of audio playback which is a massive enhancement to previous models.
The iPhone 14 is available in five colours: Midnight (Black), Starlight (White), Blue (Pale Blue), Purple (Violet) and Red.
