iPhone 13 - older model, reliable and more affordable

Introduction

The iPhone 14 has launched with some major upgrades, including an enhanced TrueDepth camera, emergency satellite communications, Crash Detection and a vastly improved battery life. In addition, all four iPhone 14 models have stereo speakers and spatial audio support which, in movies and music that support it, adds a surround-sound effect. In fact, Apple Music has an entire spatial audio playlist to explore this further and there are titles on Netflix, Amazon and other streaming services to completely immerse yourself in thanks to this game changing upgrade.

Design

The iPhone 14 benefits from a 6.1in Super Retina XDR display with a 2532 x 1170, 460ppi resolution. There are some cool new colours to choose from and a 2 gram weight loss to gloat about. The tough Ceramic Shield covering the display and the water and dust resistance are what you would expect from a smartphone of this calibre and are an excellent and intuitive design feature for everyday use.

Camera

The enhanced main camera on the iPhone 14 and improved image processing allow you to capture even more sensational shots in all kinds of light — especially low light. The front camera, also 12MP, now also benefits from autofocus which means solid group selfies are much easier to achieve. There is also a new imaging pipeline and Photonic Engine which prioritises Deep Fusion neural image processing earlier than previously which means it can work with uncompressed images.

It is sticking with the same two cameras as the iPhone 13, one of which is main wide-angle, the other is ultra-wide-angle.

Video

Like the rest of the iPhone 14 line up, this model can shoot up to 4K video, and Cinematic Mode has now been pumped up to support 4K at 30fps. Apple has included a new Action Mode on the iPhone 14 (as well as the iPhone 14 Pro) which provides extreme stabilisation for smooth footage. This means that even if you are running and attempting to capture content, you should be able to record without the worry of camera shake. If video is important to you, you will know how vital it is to capture smooth footage which is why Apple have also introduced the option of choosing 24fps or 30fps (frames per second).

Display

The iPhone 14 has a 6.1 inch display, in comparison to the Plus which is 6.7 inches. Both versions have a Super Retina XDR OLED display though and the splash, water and dust resistance ratings remain robust. The display encompasses an updated TrueDepth camera with a better light-gathering sensor, the ability to autofocus, an IR sensor, flood illuminator - above all of that sits a speaker. The other speaker is found on the bottom of the phone.

Processor

Under the hood of the iPhone 14 is the A15 Bionic processor which, with a 5 core GPU, powers all the latest features and makes games and AR apps feel ultra fluid. This is further augmented by the updated internal design which delivers better thermal efficiency so you can remain immersed in the action for longer.

Battery

The upgraded battery life on the iPhone 14 equates to 20 hours of video playback, 16 hours of streamed video, and 80 hours of audio playback which is a massive enhancement to previous models.

Colours & Options

The iPhone 14 is available in five colours: Midnight (Black), Starlight (White), Blue (Pale Blue), Purple (Violet) and Red.

iPhone 14 FAQs

It’s already out! The iPhone 14 was unveiled and launched in September 2022.
The cheapest iPhone 14 has 128GB of storage and costs £849. You can upgrade to 256GB for £959, get the 512GB model for £1,179. Of course, these are Apple’s prices - you can buy new iPhones for less at Mozillion!
Yes. Apple says the iPhone 14 can survive water up to six metres deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t go swimming with one, it’ll definitely shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.
It does! All iPhone 14 models are 5G ready.
No, only The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have ProMotion, an adaptive refresh rate technology that goes up to 120Hz. The iPhone 14 series are limited to 60Hz.
No. At least, not without an expensive repair bill.
Like most iPhones since the iPhone X, the iPhone 14 uses camera-based FaceID rather than fingerprint-based TouchID. The iPhone SE (2020) is the only current iPhone that still uses TouchID.
To turn off an iPhone 14, press and hold the side button with either volume button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the side button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.

Briefly press and hold the side button along with the volume up button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.

To video what’s on your screen, you first need to add Screen Record to the Control Centre. Tap Settings, Tap Control Centre, scroll to Screen Recording and tap the green cross next to it. With this done, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Record icon. If you want to narrate the recording, hold down the icon and switch the microphone on. Recording begins after three seconds.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to view recent app previews. Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close, then swipe it up off the top of the screen.
You can check your battery at any time by swiping down from the top right to open Control Centre. If you need at-a-glance checking, add a widget by tapping and holding the screen until the phone icons start dancing. Tap +, select Batteries in the widgets popup, choose the style you want, then tap Add Widget to add it to your screen.
First you need to set Apple Pay up: open Settings and tap Wallet & Apple Pay. Read the Apple Pay overview, then tap Continue and tap Credit or Debit Card to add a card. Either use a card that’s already associated with your Apple account, or tap Add a Different Card, scan the card, then tap Continue. Once you’ve provided the card’s three-digit security code and agreed any additional terms and conditions, tap Continue to finish the process. You can use Apple Pay on any contactless terminal. Double-press the side button on the phone, select your card if you’ve more than one set up, authenticate with Face ID, then place the phone near the terminal just as you would a payment card.
