Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3

How the two clamshells compare

Mozillion

At an event on August 10, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, and the Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro.

If you’re not sure if it’s worth upgrading or which clamshell phone to buy, here’s a list of how the Z Flip 4’s features compare to those of the Z Flip 3.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 design

The design of the Samsung Galaxy Flip hasn’t changed much since it first came out, though there have been some minor tweaks here and there. The Z Flip 3 gave the clamshell device gave a cover screen, but the Flip 4 has a slightly bigger one.

The edges are more square and flat on the Z Flip 4, the buttons are bigger, the camera lenses stick out a little further, and the hinge is thinner. Other than that, it looks like the Z Flip 3, which isn’t a bad thing. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a little shorter and narrower than the Z Flip 3, but the thickness is the same, and it’s also a little heavier.

The Z Flip 4 comes in Graphite, Bora Purple, Pink Gold, and Blue. Samsung also offers the Bespoke Edition, which comes in 75 different colour combinations.

Cream, Lavender, Phantom Black, and Green are the colours of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. There are also Bespoke Edition options or it.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 display

When opened, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 both have a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels.

The display on the Z Flip 3 has a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the main show on the Z Flip 4 can change between 1Hz and 120Hz. Both the Z Flip 4 and Z Flip 3 have HDR10+ support and a centred punch hole camera at the top.

On both devices, the outside screen is a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED Always On Display with a 512 x 260 resolution. The Z Flip 4, on the other hand, has more options and themes that go from the inside to the outside.

The newer phone’s cover screen can be changed in more ways, like with new clock designs and backgrounds like photos, GIFs, and videos. You can also use the smaller screen to see notifications, just like you could on the Flip 3, as well as make calls, reply back to texts, unlock your car, make contactless payments, and control your SmartThings devices, without opening your phone.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 specs

Samsung has replaced the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s Snapdragon 888 chipset with the newer Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip in the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Both phones have an average of 8GB of RAM, but it’s almost certain that the Z Flip 4 will be faster and more responsive when running multiple apps that use a lot of processing power.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is also better in terms of performance because it can hold more data. Both the Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 come with a 128GB base model and a 256GB model, but the Z Flip 4 also has a 512GB model for those who want as much space as possible.

Battery capacity has also increased for the Z Flip 4, jumping from the Z Flip 3’s 3300mAh capacity to 3700mAh. There’s faster charging on the Z Flip 4 too, with 25W wired charging that will offer up to 50 percent battery life from flat in 30 minutes. The Z Flip 4 and Z Flip 3 both have wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

In terms of other hardware, the Z Flip 4 retains a physical fingerprint sensor within the side power button, like the Z Flip 3, rather than opting for an under-display option.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G comes with a dual camera on the outside with two 12-megapixel sensors - one of which is a wide-angle lens with f/1.8 aperture and the other is an ultra wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture.

There’s also a 10-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.4 aperture.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 offers the same in terms of specifications - front and back, but the main rear sensor is said to be 65 per cent brighter, moving from 1.4µm pixels to 1.8µm pixels.

Under the surface, the Z Flip 4 has been improved, so you should still have a better time taking photos with it. Samsung put its Super Night Solution software on it to improve photography in low light. It also changed the lighting and stabilisation AI and added more modes to the Quick Shot function, which lets you take selfies using the outer cameras and the cover screen.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 software and latest updates

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 came with Android 11, but you can now update it to Android 12 based on One UI 4.1. The Z Flip 4, on the other hand, comes with Android 12 based on a more advanced One UI 4.1.1. With major Android updates and security patches, the new device should last a year longer.

Z Flip 4 vs Z Flip 3 price and availability

Last year, when it cost £999, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was a big surprise. The good news is that this is also the price for the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

There are three versions of the Z Flip 4 with different amounts of storage, plus the Bespoke Edition:

  • 128GB: £999
  • 256GB: £1,059
  • 256GB: £1,099 for the Bespoke Edition
  • 512GB: £1,199

You can already buy a Galaxy Z Flip 3 from a number of stores. You can only pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip 4 right now, but if you do so from Samsung, you’ll get a free memory upgrade and a free case. Other stores and carriers will likely offer their deals, though. When the Z Flip 4 goes on sale on August 26, check out the best Galaxy Z Flip 4 deals to make sure you get the best deal.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has more changes on the inside than on the outside. The Z Flip 4 has a similar design to the Z Flip 3, but it is more refined and durable. The processor and battery also get better.

If you’re wondering whether or not to switch from the Z Flip 3 to the Z Flip 4, there are a few good reasons to do so, most notably the better processor and battery, better camera, and better design. This is why you should choose the Z Flip 4 over the Z Flip 3 if you have to choose between the two.

There’s no doubt that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is better than the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Even though the hardware hasn’t changed much, the hardened body, more versatile cameras, bigger battery, new chipset, and more useful protection screen all seem like good upgrades that we’re looking forward to trying out in the coming days.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 still has a few things going for it, though. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 hasn’t gotten any major improvements, so if you already have a Z Flip 3, you probably don’t need to upgrade. Also, while the Z Flip 4’s base price hasn’t gone up from that of the Z Flip 3, we may start to see more deals on the Z Flip 3, which could make people want to save money and buy the older hardware.
