Best Android phones

By Mozillion Team

The Android operating system (OS) has come an awfully long way since the first version rolled out back in 2008. While early releases lacked the polish of iOS, Apple’s slick OS for iPhones and iPads, it soon caught up, adding features, security, and massive improvements in usability. Today more than 70% of the world’s phones run Android. But with so much choice, how do you pick a winner? Read on and we’ll guide you through the best Android phones.

A brief guide to Android

Before you buy an Android phone, it pays to bone up on what’s new in the operating system, and what you can expect from the latest phones. It’s also worth understanding the key differences from iOS.

Who owns Android?

While Apple owns iOS, and generally offers free updates for at least seven years, Android is different. Google is the project’s main sponsor and is usually seen as its owner, but technically it’s an open-source project, meaning it’s updated by a community. When you buy an Android phone it’s up to its manufacturer to offer updates, and some are quicker than others at rolling them out.

Do all Android phones have the same user experience?

Buy an iPhone, update it to the latest version of iOS, and you’ll get an almost identical experience to any other iPhone. That’s not true of Android, which is often customised by phone makers with their own tweaks. While that can add model-specific features, it’s not always a good thing: some non-standard features work better than others.

When do new Android versions launch?

Each new version of Android generally lands around August or September each year. You’ll find it first on Google’s Pixel phones. Android 17, the latest release, arrived on the Google Pixel 11 range in 2026, with older Pixels updated shortly after. Other devices get the update more slowly, as their manufacturers tweak and test the OS for their own phones.

Android devices also get regular security updates. Google’s Pixels get these every month, while some other phones get a cumulative patch a little less often.

How long will my Android phone get updates?

This used to be Android’s weak spot, but it has improved dramatically. Google now backs the Pixel with seven years of OS and security updates, and Samsung matches that on its flagships and even many of its mid-range phones. That brings the best Android phones right in line with Apple, where they used to trail.

To sum up, Android is a similarly slick and much more open alternative to iOS. You can choose from a far wider range of phones, and get apps from more than one ‘official’ store. The flipside is that there’s a wider range of quality on offer, too. Android now matches iOS for ease of use, quality and stability, and the gap on length of support has all but closed.

Boil that all down and the important message is that Android is a great operating system, spanning a greater range of phones, from those which can’t hold a candle to an iPhone, to serious rivals that beat it. So which are the best Android phones, and why?

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra

5 / 5

Why buy? As powerful and classy as Android phones get.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the phone to beat in the Android world, and the most complete device Samsung makes. Its 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED is one of the finest screens on any phone, with a 120Hz refresh rate and huge brightness, and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip makes it genuinely fast enough to rival the best iPhones.

At the back sits a serious camera system led by a 200MP main sensor and a long periscope zoom, and the built-in S Pen remains unique at this level for notes and precise edits. Samsung now promises seven years of OS and security updates, so it will stay current and safe deep into the 2030s.

It is big and it isn’t cheap, but if you want the most powerful, most capable Android phone money can buy, this is it.

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL

4.5 / 5

Why buy? Pure Android, the smartest camera, and seven years of updates.

If you want Android the way Google intends it, the Pixel 11 Pro XL is the one to get. It runs a clean, near-stock version of the OS, gets new features and Android versions first, and is backed by seven years of updates, so it stays fresh for longer than almost any rival.

The Tensor G6 chip is tuned for clever on-device AI rather than topping raw benchmarks, and it shows: the camera and its editing tools are superb, and the 6.8-inch 120Hz OLED is bright and sharp. Battery life from the largest cell in the Pixel range is strong too.

It won’t quite match the fastest chips for heavy gaming, but as an all-round Android flagship with the cleanest software and the smartest camera, it is hard to beat.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

4.5 / 5

Why buy? The most versatile Android phone, with a tablet-sized screen.

Android’s openness really shines on a foldable, and the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the best mainstream example. Closed, it works like a normal phone; opened out, you get an 8-inch 120Hz screen that transforms multitasking, reading and gaming, with proper split-screen apps and S Pen support.

It runs the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, the thinner and lighter design makes it the most pocketable Fold yet, and like the rest of Samsung’s flagship range it gets seven years of updates.

Foldables still cost more than regular flagships, and the crease hasn’t fully disappeared, but nothing else here does as much. If you want the most future-facing Android phone, this is it.

Samsung Galaxy S26

4.5 / 5

Why buy? Flagship Android power in a phone you can use one-handed.

Not everyone wants a giant phone, and the standard Galaxy S26 proves you don’t need one to get flagship performance. It shares the Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chip and slick 120Hz AMOLED screen in a compact, lightweight body that is far easier to live with.

You lose the S Pen, the very biggest camera sensors and some battery capacity compared with the Ultra, but day to day it feels every bit as fast and polished. It also gets the same seven years of updates, so it is a genuine long-term buy.

For most people who want a top Android phone without the size or the price of an Ultra, the Galaxy S26 is the sweet spot.

Google Pixel 11

Google Pixel 11

4.5 / 5

Why buy? The most affordable way into pure Android with a flagship camera.

The standard Pixel 11 brings Google’s clean software and class-leading camera to a friendlier price. It runs the same Tensor G6 chip as the Pro models, so it gets the same clever photo processing and AI features, and unusually for its price it even includes a dedicated telephoto lens for proper zoom shots.

The 6.3-inch OLED is bright and smooth, the near-stock Android is a pleasure to use, and seven years of updates mean it will keep getting new features for years. For iPhone switchers, it is about the easiest introduction to Android there is.

It isn’t the fastest phone here for gaming, but as a do-everything Android phone that won’t date quickly, the Pixel 11 is superb value.

Samsung Galaxy S25 FE

Samsung Galaxy S25 FE

4 / 5

Why buy? Flagship Galaxy features for a mid-range price.

Rounding things off, the Galaxy S25 FE (Fan Edition) takes the best bits of Samsung’s flagship line and brings them to a lower price. It is the value champion of this list, and still feels a cut above most mid-rangers.

You get a large 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED, a capable 50MP-led camera, a big battery, IP68 water resistance and Samsung’s full seven years of updates. For the money, very little is missing.

If the Ultra and the Pixels are more than you want to spend, the S25 FE gives you a genuine flagship feel for a lot less, especially refurbished.
