Best new phones 27/01/22

Nothing beats a brand new phone, but some of the new phones you buy today may actually have launched some time ago. While you’re still getting a brand new, untouched mobile, the technology inside an older phone is a little behind the curve from day one.

The relentless pace of development means that smartphones get faster all the time. Battery life is going up, while charging times are going down. Screens are getting better, and faster data speeds make downloads quicker, and streaming smoother. If you want your phone to keep up, it’s best to buy one of the newest models you can.

There’s another, more subtle reason to buy a phone while it’s still reasonably fresh. Manufacturers provide operating system and security updates for a number of years after the phone launches, rather than the date you buy it. That’s not usually a problem for iPhones, which typically get around seven years’ support, but if you buy an Android phone 18 months after launch, you might find it only has 18 months of OS updates remaining.

In this guide, we list the best new phones you can buy today in order of newness. We’ll tell you when they were launched, when they might be replaced, and when the updates might stop coming. Check out all the details in our best new phones guide.

Google’s Pixel 6 Pro is a big, unusual phone, launched to compete head-to-head with Apple and Samsung at the top end of the market. It offers a touch of stand-out glamour, along with high-end features and performance that make it a credible iPhone alternative. Launched in October 2021, it’s one of the newest phones around. It’s also due to get Android updates until October 2024, with security patches for a further two years.

Much of the focus at launch was on this phone’s Google-designed Tensor processor. While this gives it a performance lift compared to previous Pixels, its main benefit is powering the AI behind the phone’s most advanced features. These include tricks like speech recognition, language translation, and Magic Eraser – which can touch unwanted objects out of photographs.

The Pixel 6 Pro has a triple-camera system, including 48MP telephoto and 50MP wide lenses. This pro-level hardware gets levelled up further by Tensor’s advanced image processing. Stand-out image quality, enhanced by powerful creative modes, make this one of the best camera phones you can buy. Several years of updates should also help it feel new, and stay secure, for longer.

Replacement expected? October 2022
Expect updates until? 2024 (Android 14), 2026 (security patches only)

The Pixel 6 launched alongside the Pixel 6 Pro in October 2021. It’s a de-specced version of Google’s flagship handset, with a smaller, more basic OLED screen, a less impressive selfie camera, and no telephoto lens on the main camera. In most other respects it’s a match for its pro-level sibling, but it’s £250 cheaper.

Like other Pixels, the Pixel 6 will be one of the first phones to get the latest, purest version of Android. It launched with Android 12, and will probably go all the way to Android 15 before updates end in 2024. With security updates for a further two years, this phone should continue to feel like new for some time to come.

The Pixel 6 is cheaper than the entry-level iPhone 13 by almost £200, and it offers unique tools you won’t yet find on iOS. Among these, Google’s Personal Safety app offers features including car crash detection – where the phone can contact emergency services if you fail to respond after a big impact. With bang up-to-date features, great performance and the promise of several years’ updates, the Pixel 6 is a great long-term bet.

Launch date?September 2021

The cheaper option Buy an iPhone 13

Replacement expected? September 2022
Expect updates until? 2028

The iPhone 13 Pro isn’t just the best smartphone available, it’s still one of the newest. It’s got all the features you’d expect from the latest phones, most notably a battery that goes all day, waterproofing, and 5G support. This phone comes with Apple’s latest photo and video features – including the much talked about Cinematic mode – and pro formats including Apple ProRAW and ProRes for video. On top of that, it’s expected to get iOS updates until at least 2028, so it’s about as future-proof as a phone gets.

But that’s not the only reason to grab one. Inside its robust and stylish case, the iPhone 13 Pro has a special version of Apple’s A15 Bionic processor, with an extra graphics core compared to the lesser iPhone 13. It’s simply faster than any other phone. The iPhone 13 Pro also gets a massive camera upgrade over regular iPhones, with larger sensors and lenses to make low-light shots even better.

If this phone has a flaw, it’s that its 6.1” OLED screen – now with a 120Hz maximum refresh rate – can’t quite match the resolution of some rivals. It’s also rather expensive – especially if you go for the model with 1TB of storage. But if you buy one today, it’s likely to remain the ultimate iPhone until at least September 2022. Even then, its strong features and long updates will keep it feeling new for longer.

Launch date? September 2021

The cheaper optionBuy an iPhone 12 Pro Max

Replacement expected? September 2022
Expect updates until? 2028

If the iPhone 13 Pro is the best smartphone you can buy, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the best big one. It’s got all the same advantages as the iPhone 13 Pro, including crushing performance, and one of the best camera systems you’ll find on any phone.

But the iPhone 13 Pro Max is bigger than the regular Pro thanks to a screen upgrade. This phone’s 6.7” OLED has a 120Hz refresh rate, and packs in 1,284×2,778 pixels. That’s still a little short of the QHD+ screens on some rivals, but in practice it’s plenty for movie night – or movie making.

This is an extremely expensive phone, but if money really is no object – and you want a bigger screen for gaming or bingeing – it’s simply unrivalled. With all the latest features, plus support until around 2028, it’s a great long-term buy.

Replacement expected? September 2022
Expect updates until? 2028

While the iPhone 13 mini is by no means the ultimate iPhone, it’s comfortably the best small phone you can get your hands on. It gets the same waterproofing, 5G support, and seven-year iOS updates as the rest of the range, so it has the same long-term appeal. The iPhone 13 mini also has similarly mind-melting performance from its A15 Bionic chip, although it is a slightly de-tuned version of the monster fitted to the Pro-level flagships.

This phone’s main catch is that its 5.4” screen is limited to ‘just’ a 1,080×2,340 resolution, and it has only a 60Hz refresh rate. Its camera is also more basic than on the flagship iPhones, but you still get a dual-lens 12MP system with Night Mode, Photographic Styles and Cinematic mode. The phone’s smaller battery won’t hold on as long, but it’ll still last a day of normal use – and we got it to loop movies for more than 13 hours.

In essence, the iPhone 13 mini is a smaller, cheaper version of the regular iPhone 13, with very few compromises. If you want outright performance, get the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, but if you can sacrifice speed and a little photo quality for something more pocketable, buy an iPhone 13 mini, safe in the knowledge it’ll feel brand new for just as long.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G

Replacement expected? February 2022
Expect updates until? 2024 (Android 14)

There’s nothing at all wrong with the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G – it’s a great phone – but it’s low in this list because it’s due for imminent replacement. If you really want the very latest phones, either choose something else, or wait until the anticipated launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, in February 2022.

If you’re not set on absolutely the latest thing, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is still worth a look. Its whopping 6.8” panoramic OLED screen has 1,440×3,200 pixels – almost a third more than you’d get on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And at the back, its quad cameras include a 108MP wide lens and a monster 10x periscope zoom.

This phone uses Samsung’s own Exynos 2100 processor, which is towards the top of what you’ll get on any Android phone. With 5G, waterproofing, and a promise that updates will continue as far as Android 14, this ageing flagship still has plenty of long-term appeal, especially if you can find it discounted as the new model approaches.
