Let\u2019s not beat about the bush, Google\u2019s Pixel 5 is far behind the best of the Android crop when it comes to outright performance. Its Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor was widely seen as a step backwards from the Pixel 4<\/a>, and it can\u2019t hold a candle to leading Android phones – let alone any recent iPhone.<\/p>\n

With that major caveat out of the way, let\u2019s focus on what it\u2019s good at – almost everything else. Like all Pixel<\/a> phones, the Pixel 5 offers a great set of features for the money. Perhaps the most obvious is its 6\u201d OLED screen, which has a 90Hz refresh rate. There\u2019s a double camera system offering 12.2MP wide and 16MP ultra-wide lenses, too. Inside there\u2019s 5G support, alongside a substantial 4,080mAh battery, with everything protected by IP68 waterproofing.<\/p>\n

As always with Pixel, Google makes it special with enhanced software features. These include major apps like Google Camera, along with more subtle enhancements like Personal Safety, and Caller ID with spam filtering. And this phone qualifies for Android updates and security fixes until at least October 2023, helping to give it long-term appeal.<\/p>\n

Google replaced the Pixel 5 with the Pixel 6<\/a> in October 2021, and the last few new examples are selling fast. However, the price of refurbished Google Pixel 5 phones is falling. With 5G, and updates that will probably extend until Android 14, it\u2019s about as future-proof as second-hand Android phones get.<\/p>\n

Surely there\u2019s some mistake? The OnePlus 8 Pro has a top-line specification, yet here it is in a list of budget phones. In fact we\u2019re happy to confirm that, yes: you can really get your fingerprints all over its 6.5\u201d OLED, 120Hz screen for less than \u00a3500. Officially, it\u2019s \u00a3449 from OnePlus, but you can buy it new for less on Mozillion. And if you\u2019re happy to consider a refurbished example, you might even pick it up for less than \u00a3300!<\/p>\n

This is a seriously impressive phone. Aside from that gorgeous screen, it\u2019s got a quad-camera setup with a 48MP maximum resolution. There\u2019s a high-end Snapdragon 865 chip paired with 8GB of RAM, powering excellent 2D performance. And while the phone\u2019s slightly less competitive in 3D benchmarks, it\u2019s still plenty powerful enough to run taxing games well.<\/p>\n

As if all that wasn\u2019t enough, OnePlus is supporting the OnePlus 8 Pro with three major Android updates, and four years of security fixes. Taken alongside 5G support, that should keep it fresh for some time to come. If you want a premium Android phone for a song, a new or refurbished OnePlus 8 Pro makes a brilliant choice.<\/p>\n

You might have been expecting an iPhone in this list, but surely not the lovely iPhone 11 Pro? That\u2019s a flagship iPhone for less than half what you\u2019d pay for the latest models.<\/p>\n

Old phones often date quickly, but the iPhone 11 Pro still looks like a class act. Its A13 Bionic chip still trounces anything but newer iPhones, and its battery will comfortably take you through more than a day\u2019s use. You get a triple-camera setup, with features like 4K video recording, 240-frame-per-second slo-mo, and Apple\u2019s almost magical Night Mode. The iPhone 11 Pro\u2019s 5.8\u201d OLED screen has a higher resolution than even some new Android phones (we\u2019re looking at you, Pixel 6). Upgrade to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and you get a big 6.5\u201d screen, great for gaming on a budget.<\/p>\n

OK, this phone misses out on 5G, and its cameras – while good – aren\u2019t a patch on the iPhone 13 Pro<\/a>. The latest iPhone is also much faster, but that\u2019s hardly the point. Apple is likely to support this phone with updates until at least 2026. If you want to pay less for a great iPhone that will last, a reconditioned iPhone 11 Pro or Pro Max is a brilliant choice.<\/p>\n

Almost no \u2018best of\u2019 list is complete without the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, but even so it\u2019s surprising to see it cropping up among budget phones. In truth, a new example will blow through your \u00a3500 budget and then some, but with the great Samsung Galaxy S21 5G deals<\/a> on Mozillion, you can buy a refurbished Galaxy S21 5G and still have change for a new case.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll want to protect this phone\u2019s lovely 6.2\u201d OLED screen. While it can\u2019t quite match an iPhone for resolution, it\u2019s enhanced by a super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate – better than you\u2019d get on the standard iPhone 13. And then there\u2019s that triple rear camera system, comprising 12 megapixel wide and ultra-wide cameras, with a 64MP telephoto lens.<\/p>\n

All good so far, then, but the Galaxy S21 5G has a trump card: its Samsung-designed Exynos 2100 processor is one of the fastest you\u2019ll find in an Android phone. In 3D benchmarks it comes out somewhere around the speed of the iPhone SE (2020)<\/a>. In multi-core tests it\u2019s not far short of the iPhone 11. All of that makes this a lot of phone for your money, and a great iPhone 12 alternative.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re big fans of Google Pixel phones, and the Pixel 4a is one of the best all-rounders yet. Launched in August 2020 as a mid-range version of the Pixel 4, it was discontinued with the Pixel 6 launch in October 2021. While the last few new ones still cost around \u00a3350, you can buy a refurbished Google Pixel 4a<\/a> for well under that. It\u2019s no gaming powerhouse or pro filmmaking platform, but this phone does everything you could want from an everyday companion – and does it well.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with what you don\u2019t get. The Pixel 4a can\u2019t offer 5G or wireless charging, and it\u2019s not waterproofed at all. There\u2019s no fancy camera system, and at 3,140mAh the battery isn\u2019t huge. Its Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G is fairly limp too – although you\u2019re unlikely to notice unless you want to run intensive 3D games.<\/p>\n

This phone does offer a 5.8\u201d OLED screen with 1,080×2,340 resolution. That works out at 443 pixels per inch (ppi) – almost a match for the 460ppi you\u2019d get on an iPhone 13. Its low-key processor is kind to the battery, so it\u2019ll easily last more than a day. Meanwhile, the 12.2MP rear camera is enhanced by Google Camera features, including a passable Night Mode and slo-mo options.<\/p>\n

The Pixel 4a is compact by the standards of a modern Android phone – it\u2019s a touch smaller, and 30 grams lighter than the iPhone 13. But perhaps best of all, this is among the first phones to get major Android updates. It\u2019s already on Android 12, and is expected to go to at least Android 13 before Google stops updating it around August 2023. It might not excel at any one thing, but as a compact all-rounder, the Pixel 4a is great value.<\/p>\n

Stick strictly to your \u00a3250 budget and your choice of iPhones is quite limited. Happily, the iPhone XS just squeaks in. Although it\u2019s now three generations behind the curve, it\u2019s still a great phone. While it doesn\u2019t have 5G, Apple is likely to support it until at least 2025, keeping it safe and fresh with new iOS updates and security fixes.<\/p>\n

This phone\u2019s 5.8\u201d OLED screen is a significant upgrade over the bog-standard LCD fitted to the newer iPhone 11 – it\u2019s sharper, brighter, and is easier to read from a range of angles. In most other ways the iPhone XS lags a little behind, though. Probably most significantly, its dual-lens 12MP camera offers decent results, but iPhone cameras have improved markedly since. You\u2019re most likely to notice the lack of 4K video on the front camera, and the fact there\u2019s no Night Mode at all – this phone struggles in very dark conditions.<\/p>\n

Happily, the iPhone XS had such a performance advantage when new that its ageing processor isn\u2019t a problem. The A12 Bionic chip can still whip most mainstream Android phones. All this makes a refurbished iPhone XS a great budget choice, with one caveat: the oldest examples may have seen lots of use, so you should expect some loss of battery capacity.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be honest: we don\u2019t love this phone, and it makes no sense to buy it new – save up for a refurbished iPhone 12 mini<\/a> instead. But if you want a nearly-new iPhone for less than \u00a3250, a refurbished iPhone SE (2020)<\/a> is your only choice.<\/p>\n

To be fair, this isn\u2019t a bad phone. It\u2019s genuinely small, and inside there\u2019s the same A13 Bionic chip you\u2019d find in an iPhone 11 – it\u2019s faster than most of the Android competition. Other than that it\u2019s underwhelming, though: its 4.7\u201d LCD screen is tiny, the front and rear cameras are basic, and its battery life is a couple of hours behind what you\u2019d get from an iPhone 12 mini.<\/p>\n

Again, this wouldn\u2019t be our choice – we\u2019d take the iPhone XS, or keep an eye open for any iPhone 11 deals<\/a> sneaking under \u00a3250. But if it has to be iOS, and you need it as new as possible, this is the phone.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re after a high-end phone on a tight budget, you need to look a couple of generations back. Samsung\u2019s Galaxy S10 was part of the flagship Galaxy S lineup announced in 2019. Since then we\u2019ve had the S20 and the S21, so it\u2019s no longer the latest thing, but a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S10 is still a thing of beauty – and it costs less than \u00a3200.<\/p>\n

So what do you get for the money? First up, there\u2019s a 6.1\u201d OLED screen. So far so iPhone, but this one has a 1,440×3,040 resolution giving it 550ppi – more pixels than you can get from Apple. At the back there\u2019s a triple-camera system offering 16MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP zoom, with all three supporting 4K video. Inside, everything\u2019s powered by Samsung\u2019s Exynos 9820 chip – it\u2019s some way off the latest phones, but it\u2019s not too shabby.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s missing? Chiefly 5G. If that\u2019s a deal-breaker, try stretching your budget to a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S10 5G<\/a>. What\u2019s big, cheap, and great value for money? This budget Android phone from Nokia. Released in early 2020, the Nokia 5.3 launched with Android 10 – but because it\u2019s an Android ONE phone, it qualifies for two years\u2019 of operating system updates and at least three years of security. It\u2019s already on Android 11, and is expected to get Android 12 soon.<\/p>\n

At this price there are obviously some limitations. The huge 6.55\u201d screen is only a 720×1,600 LCD, so it gives away a lot in image quality to the OLED screens in more expensive phones. Inside there\u2019s only 64GB of storage and just 4GB of RAM, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 is nothing to brag about. However, with a quad-camera setup offering 4K video, wide, ultra-wide and macro photography, you still get a decent amount for your money.<\/p>\n

This phone won\u2019t win many prizes or admiring looks, but if you want a cheap new phone running the latest version of Android, it\u2019s still a good choice for the money.<\/p>\n
