Google\u2019s Pixel 6 Pro is a big, unusual phone, launched to compete head-to-head with Apple and Samsung at the top end of the market. It offers a touch of stand-out glamour, along with high-end features and performance that make it a credible iPhone alternative. Launched in October 2021, it\u2019s one of the newest phones around. It\u2019s also due to get Android updates until October 2024, with security patches for a further two years.<\/p>\n

Much of the focus at launch was on this phone\u2019s Google-designed Tensor processor. While this gives it a performance lift compared to previous Pixels, its main benefit is powering the AI behind the phone\u2019s most advanced features. These include tricks like speech recognition, language translation, and Magic Eraser – which can touch unwanted objects out of photographs.<\/p>\n

The Pixel 6 launched alongside the Pixel 6 Pro in October 2021. It\u2019s a de-specced version of Google\u2019s flagship handset, with a smaller, more basic OLED screen, a less impressive selfie camera, and no telephoto lens on the main camera. In most other respects it\u2019s a match for its pro-level sibling, but it\u2019s \u00a3250 cheaper.<\/p>\n

Like other Pixels, the Pixel 6 will be one of the first phones to get the latest, purest version of Android. It launched with Android 12, and will probably go all the way to Android 15 before updates end in 2024. With security updates for a further two years, this phone should continue to feel like new for some time to come.<\/p>\n

The Pixel 6 is cheaper than the entry-level iPhone 13 by almost \u00a3200, and it offers unique tools you won\u2019t yet find on iOS. Among these, Google\u2019s Personal Safety app offers features including car crash detection – where the phone can contact emergency services if you fail to respond after a big impact. With bang up-to-date features, great performance and the promise of several years\u2019 updates, the Pixel 6 is a great long-term bet.<\/p>\n

The iPhone 13 Pro isn\u2019t just the best smartphone available, it\u2019s still one of the newest. It\u2019s got all the features you\u2019d expect from the latest phones, most notably a battery that goes all day, waterproofing, and 5G support. This phone comes with Apple\u2019s latest photo and video features – including the much talked about Cinematic mode – and pro formats including Apple ProRAW and ProRes for video. On top of that, it\u2019s expected to get iOS updates until at least 2028, so it\u2019s about as future-proof as a phone gets.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not the only reason to grab one. Inside its robust and stylish case, the iPhone 13 Pro has a special version of Apple\u2019s A15 Bionic processor, with an extra graphics core compared to the lesser iPhone 13. It\u2019s simply faster than any other phone. The iPhone 13 Pro also gets a massive camera upgrade over regular iPhones, with larger sensors and lenses to make low-light shots even better.<\/p>\n

If this phone has a flaw, it\u2019s that its 6.1\u201d OLED screen – now with a 120Hz maximum refresh rate – can\u2019t quite match the resolution of some rivals. It\u2019s also rather expensive – especially if you go for the model with 1TB of storage. But if you buy one today, it\u2019s likely to remain the ultimate iPhone until at least September 2022. Even then, its strong features and long updates will keep it feeling new for longer.<\/p>\n

If the iPhone 13 Pro is the best smartphone you can buy, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the best big one. It\u2019s got all the same advantages as the iPhone 13 Pro, including crushing performance, and one of the best camera systems you\u2019ll find on any phone.<\/p>\n

But the iPhone 13 Pro Max is bigger than the regular Pro thanks to a screen upgrade. This phone\u2019s 6.7\u201d OLED has a 120Hz refresh rate, and packs in 1,284×2,778 pixels. That\u2019s still a little short of the QHD+ screens on some rivals, but in practice it\u2019s plenty for movie night – or movie making.<\/p>\n

This is an extremely expensive phone, but if money really is no object – and you want a bigger screen for gaming or bingeing – it\u2019s simply unrivalled. With all the latest features, plus support until around 2028, it\u2019s a great long-term buy.<\/p>\n

While the iPhone 13 mini is by no means the ultimate iPhone, it\u2019s comfortably the best small phone you can get your hands on. It gets the same waterproofing, 5G support, and seven-year iOS updates as the rest of the range, so it has the same long-term appeal. The iPhone 13 mini also has similarly mind-melting performance from its A15 Bionic chip, although it is a slightly de-tuned version of the monster fitted to the Pro-level flagships.<\/p>\n

This phone\u2019s main catch is that its 5.4\u201d screen is limited to \u2018just\u2019 a 1,080×2,340 resolution, and it has only a 60Hz refresh rate. Its camera is also more basic than on the flagship iPhones, but you still get a dual-lens 12MP system with Night Mode, Photographic Styles and Cinematic mode. The phone\u2019s smaller battery won\u2019t hold on as long, but it\u2019ll still last a day of normal use – and we got it to loop movies for more than 13 hours.<\/p>\n

In essence, the iPhone 13 mini is a smaller, cheaper version of the regular iPhone 13, with very few compromises. If you want outright performance, get the iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max, but if you can sacrifice speed and a little photo quality for something more pocketable, buy an iPhone 13 mini, safe in the knowledge it\u2019ll feel brand new for just as long.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing at all wrong with the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G – it\u2019s a great phone – but it\u2019s low in this list because it\u2019s due for imminent replacement. If you really want the very latest phones, either choose something else, or wait until the anticipated launch of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, in February 2022.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not set on absolutely the latest thing, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is still worth a look. Its whopping 6.8\u201d panoramic OLED screen has 1,440×3,200 pixels – almost a third more than you\u2019d get on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And at the back, its quad cameras include a 108MP wide lens and a monster 10x periscope zoom.<\/p>\n

This phone uses Samsung\u2019s own Exynos 2100 processor, which is towards the top of what you\u2019ll get on any Android phone. With 5G, waterproofing, and a promise that updates will continue as far as Android 14, this ageing flagship still has plenty of long-term appeal, especially if you can find it discounted as the new model approaches.<\/p>\n
