Why buy a refurbished Apple iPhone X?

Mozillion Apple iPhone X review

Flagship features
Smaller than an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12
Great camera and screen

Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone X:

iPhone 11 Pro - newer, with an even better camera
iPhone XS - Similar phone with a newer spec.
Samsung Galaxy S10 - a high-spec Android alternative

When Apple announced the iPhone X in September 2017, it confirmed longstanding rumours of a radical iPhone redesign. Where earlier iPhones had a noticeable bezel along with borders above and below the screen, the new iPhone X ditched them in favour of the so-called ‘bezel-less’ design - it’s still with us today.

Out went the fingerprint reader, and in came Face ID biometrics, based on new depth sensor technology. Making the most of its larger screen area, the iPhone X was the first iPhone with an OLED display. It also gained fast charging, and Qi wireless charging. Unlike newer flagship iPhones, there’s no Max version of the iPhone X.

The iPhone X introduced Apple’s new ‘bezel-less’ design, which crams in a larger screen without the bigger borders seen on earlier phones. Although the new arrangement was clearly an improvement, the black ‘notch’ caused controversy at launch. This black indentation at the top of the screen houses the front camera and Face ID technology - though smaller, it’s still on today’s iPhones.

The new design helped the iPhone X fit a 5.8” screen into a compact body - it’s slightly smaller even than the svelte iPhone 12. Like the earlier iPhone 7, the iPhone X was waterproofed to 30 minutes at one metre’s depth.

The iPhone X has a dual camera setup quite similar to the iPhone XS that followed it. However, the iPhone X uses an older, smaller sensor type, so its low-light performance is slightly inferior. The twin cameras cover wide and telephoto angles, where newer flagship iPhones like the iPhone 11 Pro include ultra-wide. In practice, that might mean the iPhone X would struggle to fit in all your friends in a big group photo. On the plus side, it has a huge 10x digital zoom range.

At the front the 7MP ‘TrueDepth’ camera is augmented with infrared depth scanning - essential for Face ID. That said, some examples of the iPhone X don’t have Face ID - we list these separately on the marketplace to avoid confusion.

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 introduced improved video capabilities, with the rear camera now able to shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. Again, although there’s no ultra-wide lens, there’s a big 6x digital zoom and optical image stabilisation to help make up for it. While the front camera doesn’t support 4K, it can still shoot 1080p video at up to 30fps. Unfortunately, the iPhone X can only record video with mono audio, rather than in stereo.

The iPhone X was the first iPhone available with an OLED screen. The technology has now replaced older LCD screens on all flagship iPhones, and from the iPhone 12 is standard across the whole range. OLED displays tend to be brighter and sharper, with much higher contrast ratios, yet slightly lower power use. It’s a very worthwhile upgrade: on the iPhone X, the 2,436x1,125 screen has 458 pixels per inch; the iPhone 11’s 1,192x828 LCD manages only 326ppi.

The A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X was a massive leap forward from the A10 Fusion found in the iPhone 7, but it’s now three generations behind the A14 found in the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone X deals reasonably well with today’s games and apps, but it may not perform strongly on the most demanding ones.

Apple has been making incremental improvements to iPhones’ battery life, and the iPhone X is now a little way behind. A new iPhone X offered up to 13 hours’ video playback, but the iPhone 12 lasts 17 hours. A refurbished iPhone X should still perform well, but the battery may not last as long as it did when new.

Colours & Options

Apple offered the iPhone X in just two colours: Space Gray and silver. When it came to storage there was a choice of 64GB or 256GB - unlike newer flagships, there was no 512GB option. At launch, the 64GB iPhone X was the most expensive iPhone yet, costing £999 in the UK. Each new iPhone X came with EarPods with a Lightning connector, and had a standard charger in the box. The iPhone X supports Qi wireless charging, too.

As with other iPhones, there’s an almost limitless market for iPhone X accessories. Because it’s physically nearly identical to the iPhone XS, most cases and mounts fit both phones.
