Introduction
Apple launched the iPhone 8 Plus in September 2017, at the same time that it announced the flagship iPhone X. While the latter’s design grabbed all the attention, the new iPhone 8 Plus was a significant step forward from the iPhone 7 Plus. In came fast charging, Qi wireless charging, a glass back, and improvements to the camera and displays, while the phone shared much of the iPhone X’s internals.
Design
The iPhone 8 Plus was the last phablet version of a mainstream iPhone. From the iPhone XS Max onwards, Apple has only offered plus-sized versions of its flagship phones. It’s also the last iPhone phablet without a ‘bezel-less’ design. As a result, there’s much less room for a truly large screen. Although the iPhone 8 Plus is roughly as big as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, it only manages a 5.5” display - the iPhone 12 Pro Max squeezes in 6.7”.
Camera
The iPhone 8 Plus shares the dual-camera system found on the back of the iPhone X. It covers wide and telephoto angles, rather than ultra-wide, so it might be harder to fit everyone into a group shot. On the plus side, there’s a huge 10x digital zoom range. Unlike the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus does benefit from a portrait mode.
At the front, a 7MP camera handles selfie and FaceTime duty. The iPhone 8 Plus deals with authentication using its fingerprint sensor - it doesn’t support Face ID.
Video
The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus introduced improved video capabilities, with the rear camera now able to shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. Again, although there’s no ultra-wide lens, there’s a big 6x digital zoom and optical image stabilisation to help make up for it. The front camera doesn’t support 4K, but it can still shoot 1080p video at up to 30fps. Unfortunately, the iPhone 8 can only record video with mono audio, rather than in stereo.
Display
The iPhone 8 Plus has a near-identical LCD screen to the iPhone 7 Plus. Measuring 5.5”, it offers 401 pixels per inch - mid-way between the 326ppi in the iPhone 8 and the 458ppi found on the iPhone X. While it’s still a good screen, it’s worth noting that it’s smaller and less detailed than the 5.8” OLED found in the iPhone X. If you mainly want a big detailed screen, you’d do better with that.
Processor
The iPhone 8 Plus is a massive leap forward from the iPhone 7 Plus when it comes to processing power. However, its A11 Bionic chip is now three generations behind the A14 found in the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 8 Plus deals reasonably well with today’s games and apps, but it may not perform strongly on the most demanding ones.
Battery
With more space for a bigger battery, the iPhone 8 Plus offered an extra hour of video playback compared to the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. New it could manage 14 hours on a single charge. A refurbished iPhone 8 Plus should still perform well, but the battery may not last as long as it did when new.
Colours & Options
Apple offered the iPhone 8 Plus in silver, Space Gray and gold, and when it came to storage there was a choice of 64GB or 128GB. Each new iPhone 8 Plus came with a standard charger, along with EarPods with a Lightning connector. As with other iPhones, there’s an almost limitless market for iPhone 8 Plus accessories.
