Not convinced? Try one of these alternatives to an Apple iPhone 8:
Apple launched the iPhone 8 in September 2017, at the same time that it announced the flagship iPhone X. While the latter’s design grabbed all the attention, the new iPhone 8 was a significant step forward from the iPhone 7. In came fast charging, Qi wireless charging, a glass back, and improvements to the camera and displays, while the phone shared much of the iPhone X’s internals.
The iPhone 8 was almost the last mainstream iPhone without a ‘bezel-less’ design - only the iPhone SE 2020 holds out. Although it’s marginally smaller than today’s iPhone 12, its 4.7” screen is tiny in comparison. In the border beneath it there’s a Touch ID fingerprint reader, while the border above holds the front-facing camera and speaker. It’s a compact, classic design, but there’s no denying it’s quite dated now.
The iPhone 8 has a single 12-megapixel camera which uses an older, smaller sensor than newer iPhones, so its low-light performance is slightly inferior. While there’s no optical zoom, there is digital zoom up to 5x, and optical image stabilisation to banish the shakes. The iPhone 8 also misses out on the portrait mode features first introduced on the iPhone 8 Plus.
At the front, a 7MP camera handles selfie and FaceTime duty. The iPhone 8 deals with authentication using its fingerprint sensor - it doesn’t support Face ID.
The iPhone X and iPhone 8 introduced improved video capabilities, with the rear camera now able to shoot 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. Again, while there’s only one lens, 3x digital zoom helps add flexibility. The front camera doesn’t support 4K, but it can still shoot 1080p video at up to 30fps. Unfortunately, the iPhone 8 can only record video with mono audio, rather than in stereo.
The iPhone 8 has a near-identical LCD screen to the iPhone 7. Measuring just 4.7”, and with 326 pixels per inch, it’s not a match for newer iPhones with OLED displays. While it’s still a good screen, offering crisp and clear text and images, its 1,334x750 resolution might limit its ability to display detail in today’s apps and games.
The iPhone 8 is a massive leap forward from the iPhone 7 when it comes to processing power. However, its A11 Bionic chip is now three generations behind the A14 found in the iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 8 deals reasonably well with today’s games and apps, but it may not perform strongly on the most demanding ones.
Apple has been making incremental improvements to iPhones’ battery life, and the iPhone 8 is now a little way behind. New, it offered a good performance of up to 13 hours’ video playback, but the iPhone 12 offers 17 hours. A refurbished iPhone 8 should still perform well, but the battery may not last as long as it did when new.
Colours & Options
Apple offered the iPhone 8 in silver, Space Gray and gold, and when it came to storage there was a choice of 64GB or 128GB. Each new iPhone 8 came with a standard charger, along with EarPods with a Lightning connector. As with other iPhones, there’s an almost limitless market for iPhone 8 accessories.
