Apple’s iPhone 12 is everything you’d expect from an iPhone, and more. Blistering performance, 5G connectivity, sumptuous screen - you can tick them all off. More than just a design icon, the iPhone 12 is quietly practical too. It’s water resistant, has an all-day battery, and supports a range of mag-safe accessories.
The iPhone continues to set the benchmark for beautiful smartphones. The iPhone 12’s gorgeous Super Retina XDR screen extends almost right to the edge of the phone. Quite apart from looking stunning, it means the generous screen is wrapped in a barely bigger phone. It’s a good job it’s covered in Ceramic Shield - a glass Apple says is four times more resistant to drop damage.
With the iPhone 12, Apple has kept its Lightning charging and data port, but also added support for new MagSafe wireless chargers. The MagSafe system supports a range of other accessories including cases and car mounts, helping keep wires out of the picture.
The iPhone 12 camera is one of the best you’ll find on any mobile phone. The 12 megapixel system has two cameras providing wide and ultra wide angles - but it misses out on the third, telephoto camera only found on iPhone 12 Pro models. There’s optical image stabilisation, with up to a 5X software zoom. The results are sensational in almost any lighting conditions.
The iPhone 12’s video quality puts even pro video cameras to shame. It records 4K video at up to sixty frames per second (60fps), or HDR video with Dolby Vision at 30fps. There’s optical image stabilisation too, so you can get a steady shot even when you’re moving about.
If you thought the iPhone 11 had a great display, wait until you see the iPhone 12. Apple has ditched LCD technology in favour of OLED, producing a crisper, brighter display with intense contrast. Dubbed Super Retina XDR, the new edge-to-edge screen packs in 460 pixels per inch (ppi) - a huge leap from the 326ppi on the iPhone 11. The result? Sharper text and crisper, vibrant images, in one of the best mobile phone screens you’ll find.
All the new iPhone 12 models benefit from the Apple A14 Bionic chip. Apple says it’s the fastest processor in any smartphone, and who are we to doubt it? Capable of one trillion operations a second, the A14 might seem like overkill for those group WhatsApp messages, but it helps make the iPhone 12 a formidable gaming, photography and filmmaking platform.
With its frankly bonkers processor, you might expect the iPhone 12 to struggle keeping the lights on. Fortunately, Apple has engineered everything to conserve energy, resulting in a phone that plays back video for up to 17 hours on a charge - or audio for more than two days.
Apple remains one of the few smartphone makers to bother with more than a couple of colours. The iPhone 12 can be had in the traditional white or black, along with red, green, purple or blue. You can buy cases that clash or compliment, and other MagSafe accessories such as a wireless charging cradle for the car.
The cheapest iPhone 12 comes with just 64GB of storage - Apple will happily sell you a 128GB or 256GB version if you can afford it. iPhones have never had an SD card slot, so you can’t expand the storage later. Like other recent iPhones, you won’t find earbuds or a charger in the iPhone 12 box. The phone has no 3.5mm socket, so wired headphones are a no-no.

Yes. Apple says the iPhone 12 can survive water up to six metres deep for 30 minutes. While we wouldn’t go swimming with one, it’ll definitely shrug off everyday spills - or the dreaded toilet drop.
Like previous iPhones, the iPhone 12 has a Lightning connector. You can use the supplied USB-C to Lightning cable to top it up from a compatible power source. An old USB-A to Lightning cable will let you recharge an iPhone 12 from a wider range of existing chargers, power banks or vehicles. You’ll need a 20W or better power adaptor for the quickest charge.
The iPhone 12 also supports wireless charging through MagSafe branded stands, mats and car mounts.

To turn off an iPhone 12, press and hold the side button with either volume button until the power off slider appears. When it does, drag it across and wait 30 seconds for the phone to fully shut down.
If the phone is on, turn it off following the instructions above. If it’s already off, press and hold the side button on the right-hand side until the Apple logo appears. If it doesn’t appear, charge the phone for a few minutes first.
Briefly press and hold the side button along with the volume up button. You’ll hear a shutter sound, and a screenshot thumbnail should appear on the screen. Tap this to edit, share or delete the screenshot.
To video what’s on your screen, you first need to add Screen Record to the Control Centre. Tap Settings, Tap Control Centre, scroll to Screen Recording and tap the green cross next to it.
With this done, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Centre and tap the Screen Record icon. If you want to narrate the recording, hold down the icon and switch the microphone on. Recording begins after three seconds.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to view recent app previews. Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close, then swipe it up off the top of the screen.
You can check your battery at any time by swiping down from the top right to open Control Centre. If you need at-a-glance checking, add a widget by tapping and holding the screen until the phone icons start dancing. Tap +, select Batteries in the widgets popup, choose the style you want, then tap Add Widget to add it to your screen.
First you need to set ApplePay up: open Settings and tap Wallet & Apple Pay. Read the ApplePay overview, then tap Continue and tap Credit or Debit Card to add a card. Either use a card that’s already associated with your Apple account, or tap Add a Different Card, scan the card, then tap Continue. Once you’ve provided the card’s three-digit security code and agreed any additional terms and conditions, tap Continue to finish the process.
You can use ApplePay on any contactless terminal. Double-press the side button on the phone, select your card if you’ve more than one set up, authenticate with Face ID, then place the phone near the terminal just as you would a payment card.
